White rabbit's solution to video playback freezes with 1100's GeoForce driver does work: Control Panel>Display>Advanced>Troubleshoot>move slider to left to disable Direct-3D. WMP will playback videos (also IE8 clips) with some blockiness in windowed mode, better fullscreen. Even DVD movies again playback with new WMP interface reasonably well. MPlayer also works with same results. At least hard freezes are semi-resolved.

Uninstalling Q-Menu and reinstalling got full functioning back with rotate soft button rotate also back.

Last remaining issues here are lag in on-screen keyboard (not in Vista) and rather sluggish IE8 performance with many sites (especially GBM's).

Have you tried laptopvideo2go's driver's with modified inf? Newer driver may solve the problem. I'm using 84.43 with doze's modified inf and changed Rotateflag to 0x40. Everything works as it should and I can use the latest Google Earth in OpenGl mode. Unfortunately I don't have access to IE7

I've got Windows 7 running just fine aside from some DirectX/3D programs freezing my 1.1GHz TC1100. I haven't tried anything in Media Player or Media Center as far as video goes. I could browse Youtube without issue though. Even the SD reader works. I did have an issue with Photoshop CS2 not working with the pressure sensitivity but I installed the latest 5.05-7 RC driver from Wacom and now it works fine. The cursor in PS is a little off, but the pressure is working.

Did anyone else try this? I’ve downloaded 84.43 from w w w.driverheavendownloads.net/download.php?site=2&file=84.xx/84.43_forceware_winxp2k_english.zip ( linked from w w w.driverheavendownloads.net/nvidia.htm ; (remove the spaces in URL’s starting with w w w’s – I needed to insert them because of the link posting limitations for newbies)) and let it decompress itself to under c:\NVIDIA (of course, it couldn’t install as it’s incompatible with the system). I’ve replaced the INF file (after changing the two (!) occurrences of Rotateflag in the file from 4 to 0x40) and, after renaming, I’ve copied the DLL file to the same directory. After this, I’ve run setup.exe in the same c:\NVIDIA\some subdirectory as an administrator, in SP2 compatibility mode.

It didn't really work – I couldn’t find any difference from the stock HP driver (also installed as Administrator, in XP SP2 compatibility mode). While it does support rotation (unlike the standard, stock driver installed by Win7 by default), it also crashes on D3D / movie playback with a nv4_mini.sys BSOD (page fault in nonpaged area).

I've tried installing the driver twice: once with a completely fresh W7 (re)install, with only the generic VGA driver in place, and, originally, with the HP driver in place. The same BSOD both times.

Some additional remarks:

1, SD card support:
- If you let it auto-install the driver when you insert a <=1 GB card, it’ll work until you reboot your machine. After you do reboot the TC1100, it won’t work even with <=1 GB cards – inserting them will result in an immediate crash. The same will happen if you insert >1GB card in the slot even before the first reboot – they’ll freeze the TC1100 for the time the cards are in (but not later – unlike after reboots).

I’ve played quite a bit with trying to find and remove the driver, TI UltraMedia_sd, from the system – in vain. There’s no such driver in Device Manager; removing the similar-named System Devices / TI UltraMedia Firmware Loader Device didn’t help; neither did PCMCIA Adapters/Texas Instruments PCI-1620…. I’ve even run some very thorough searches in the file system under \Windows to find the driver that is installed and needs to be removed so that the subsequent card insertion can trigger the automatic reinstall (and working of the card until the next reboot) but in vain. I’ve even run searches for .inf files with ‘UltraMedia’ – no success. All I’ve found was references to the above-mentioned System Devices / TI UltraMedia Firmware Loader Device. Removing the instance that could be removed (that is, not the one in the driver repository) didn’t help.

The XP SD driver (sp29116.exe) doesn’t help – the card remains invisible if you install it, unlike with the driver that is auto-installed first time you insert a compatible card.

2, Wacom pressure sensitivity support: as with XP, the factory driver available at the official HP download page doesn’t support pressure sensitivity. You must download the XP driver from HERE w w w.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm?CFID=10184771&CFTOKEN=19032496 (if the link doesn’t work, go HERE w w w.wacom.com/productsupport/select.cfm and select Tablet PC from the left and Windows XP from the right list). (I’ve used XP SP2 compatibility mode and installed it as an administrator.)

I’ve tested it work with Corel Painter X, in Edit / Preferences / Bush Tracking. With a non- pressure sensitive (HP) driver, the lowermost two sliders will remain the same, no matter how much hard you press the pen on the screen on the scrap field; with the Wacom driver, they’ll move just like the uppermost sliders. (Photoshop users should take a look at w w w.wacom.com/tips/photoshop.cfm , should they not know how pressure sensitivity can be utilized. A not that interesting video is at lucky13.deviantart.com/art/Tablet-and-Pen-Pressure-Movie-6478541 )

3, the only “Unknown device” you’ll see are the buttons – everything else will be found online after install. This means you’ll only need to install the video driver (don’t forget to disable acceleration to at least D3D levels!), Q Menu and the button drivers of the official HP drivers – nothing else. And, of course, the Wacom driver from the Wacom folks (and NOT the HP ones!), should you need pressure sensitivity.

4, make absolutely sure you backup your stuff from time to time. I’ve collected my W7 remarks in a plain text file edited by Total Commander’s built-in editor. Once, after a reboot, it just disappeared – a day’s worth of remarks have been gone. This would never have happened under XP. That is, be extra cautious.

Other remarks on video drivers:

1, At tabletpcreview (see forum.tabletpcreview.com/showpost.php?p=144782&postcount=17 ), w w w.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=26&go=giveme &dwn_id=129 was recommended. With it, at least the D3D-dependent PlayStation emu works (haven't tested with other 3D titles). However, video playback (in, say, WMP) results in an immediate crash - so does WEI. Neither does it support Portrait. That is, it seems it’s completely cr@p. (Of course, as usual, I’ve installed it as an admin and in XP SP2 compatibility mode.)

2, Also tested with the latest Vista driver (178.24_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_whql.zip) with the driverheaven.net “Mobility Modder” hack (driverheaven.net/nvmodtool.php ). A no go - not even orientation changing is supported.

I’ve done the same to ForceWare 93.71 WHQL (w w w.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html as it’s the last driver to support the GeForce 4 MX series, according to the page at w w w.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us ) – a no-go either.

Note that I haven’t tested GeForce Release 179 for Notebooks (see w w w.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winxp_179.28_beta.html ) - did anyone check them out?

Menneisyys, despite junior status, is one of THE top experts in WMobile OS dissection and other deep tech related matters. If there IS a way to ferret out a solution to Win7 video issues with older chips, he'll eventually find one. Welcome to the discussion and am awaiting further results!

Greetings. First Post!

Just thought I might chime in with my W7 experiences. I've been busy testing W7 media center(7MC) functionality but, as a welcome distraction took beta 1 as the build Id have a play with on the tc1100 :) Installation of 7000 was 25 minutes. I installed the xp drivers as per HP's site in compat mode of course. This included:
*nvidia drivers(Jan 2004) >>I dont see the point of modded drivers when they dont work A mod including a 94.xx xp version would likely be a stable uprade as 420M was supported until this version. Still, Id wager the improvemens wont be hugely significant from a functionality aspect.
*soundmax audio drivers
*wLan
*tablet pc button
*Q-menu

On restart, I was pleased to find all worked well, including the orientation button. I then ran windows update which identified 4 available updates for hardware:
*wLan
*irda(lolz)
*wacom digitizer
*multimedia slot >>I havent tested the sd slot since this as I dont have one

What I like:

*Installed and boots quicker than vista
*The roomy OSK and the way pressed keys flash and fade
*old school drivers deployed ok, for most part.
*The (non aero of course) basic theme is a bit less garish than vista basic

Build 7000 is perfectly functional for what I use it for, surfing, emails, a bit of xml fiddling. The TIP enhancements are great

What needs work:
*As the dx9 bypass hack (in its previous form) is no longer valid, wmc is mostly useless. I can get some dvrms/wtv files playing...sometimes!
*video files are a mess.. the new integrated windows media foundation codecs just dont do it like ffdshow can. Quite often, files I open in wmp freeze the whole device.
>>I know the indicated 3d acceleration tweaks make wmp a bit more stable - but not enough for my liking. For now I am making do with VLC, which works ok, even at fullscreen. It does infrequently stall though
*TC1100 gets confused with sleep/wake. I dont use this much, but did notice it.

Conclusion
If basic text based activities are what you use your TC1100 for, you will likely have a very pleasant experience playing with W7 build 7000. If you are used to more multimedia functionality, there are some issues that plague both W7 itself, coupled with some of the TC1100's own limitations.

Looking forward to subsequent improvements and workarounds!

Special tip: (whatever OS you are using)
Firefox has some great extensions to maximise screen real estate, especially for those of us that like to work in portrait mode:
*A nice dark theme. Black on screen -- good for battery life. Midnight foxy and rulerdark are nice
*stylish plus tabs on top extension - a la google chrome
*fast dial - like opera's speed dial
*omnibar -fuses search and address bar
*fission - fuses address and status bar
*tiny menu - decrease space taken up by menu items/text by reducing it to one menu
*hide chrome - toggle hide/show the top title bar for a bit extra space

Here's the end product if youre curious(newb link prohibited -so plz fix start)
