fan noise is unacceptable on the tc 1000

I bought mine one year ago to use it as a language teacher
( I often change rooms 3 to 5 times a day and have to make notes standing and moving, and weight is an issue.)

I used it to take note on a crash course I took last year : everybody was looking at me

last week I was in a classroom full of students taking their exams and I had to shut the thing after 10 minutes : way too loud : it's a hair drier after twenty minutes' use maximum

the combination of text recognition/ word processing doesn't bring the fan into play, the culprit is windows journal

I have run tests and tests and there is an alternative : Myscript

with journal fan becomes loud after ten minutes and never really stops ( background hair dryer's noise is bad for deep thinking...)

with myscript it's only after 45 minutes you hear the fan and if you hibernate the system for 4 5 minutes you can use it for another 45 or so without undue noise

Compaq don't seem to be aware of the problem. They have told me to send them the unit to have the fan checked and possibly replaced...
how long would I have to dispense with the tool I use on a daily basis?

I have found a replacement tablet pc on ebay ( stylistic 4110 ). full stop.

    gilles,

I understand that Journal consumes fewer resources and the Tablet runs cooler if you turn off handwriting recognition.

... In Journal ... Tools | Options | Other - uncheck handwriting recognition.

CPU utilization by Journal (Task Manager) looks to be 30-50% lower.

You could always turn it back on later when you are not in a "live" situation.

Battery Aid is also a big help. At meetings, I set Battery Aid to "Battery Optimized" and the fan never comes on while taking notes in Journal.

I agree, though. That fan can seem pretty loud in a quite room.

Where did you find the battery aid software at? I did a few searches and only found one on the simens website. Can you post a link?

It's been a while since I dowloaded it, but I believe you can find it here:
    http://support.fujitsupc.com/CS/Port...srch=DOWNLOADS

Then select the following from the pull-down menus to get to the correct computer:
    SELECT PRODUCT: Notebooks
    SELECT SERIES: P Series
    SELECT MODEL: 1035
    Click on: GO

Scroll down to the Windows 2000 drivers and download Battery Aid.

Hopefully that will work for you.

I have the same fan problem with the TC1000.

When using Journal for writing even one full page, the fan turns on and does not turn off -- even for about 1/2 an hour or more!

I upgraded memory to 756 (max) and still the fan runs continuosly.
It's bothersome even if no one else is around. You get the impression the TC1000 is about to overheat and melt! :)

I'm going to try the battery application and turn the hand-writing recognition off and report back. I sincerely hope the fan takes a break..

Kupe - are you taking a large amount of notes? ie a full page or more?

I experience it as well on about the second page, turning off hand writing has helped but I still get fan noises. My problem is that I am also voice recording the lectures which I think is just using too much power. Thanks for the link for battery aid, I will give it a try and report back.

It's also available for download on my web-site under the "software" section

Usually several pages - often with multiple Journal files open at the same time. When I use battery aid the fan never comes on - and if the fan is on because I am in auto mode, switching to battery optimized slows the fan down in about a minute.

FWIW, I usually have the screen brightness turned down 1-3 ticks (brightness not needed and I find it extends the battery life noticeably). I also have the Hitachi 7200 rpm, 60 gb hard drive - it might run cooler than stock, but I never had the fan come on with battery aid running battery optimized with my original hard drive either.
