Default Since intels best cpu is the 1.7ghz intel pentiu

Since intels best cpu is the 1.7ghz intel pentium m for laptops of this kind, Can i buy a 1.7 and swap it with my 1.6? Would i have any problems doing that?

Also, I was wondering if you can upgrade the graphics card so video games look better, like to a 128mb videocard.

    Any info would help!

    thanks

are you talking Tablet PCs?? the cost to swap out the boards..assuming it is possible and probably not...would be greater than just buying the 1.7 to begin with. Since you are in the Gateway forum, I assume you have a Gateway?..and they dont have a 1.7 tablet..just 1.6...and the toshiba 1.7 board...assuming you could even buy it...would not fit...
not sure what you are trying to do...but I think you may want to re-think or re-state what you want

In theory, you wouldn't need to swap out the board, simply the processor. However, the processor is sautered to the board (Intel makes a slotted Pentium M, but as far as I know, no notebook/tablet manufacturers use them). So the answer is unfortunately no.

As for upgrading the video card, I think the answer there is also no. The intel graphics chips are integrated into the motherboard, as is the ram used for video (is it shared with system RAM?? I may have read this somewhere...). I don't know whether a mini-PCI video card can be purchased, or if it could, whether it would work in the slot in the M275 (allowing redirection of the video would be impossible I would think). Even if it did, you'd be giving up your wireless networking, which I'd imagine would be a poor trade for slightly improved graphics. You definitely can't (or more precisely wouldn't want to) utilize a PCMCIA card for video. Thus, I think the answer to this is also unfortunately no.

Not considering whether its actually possible, because its not, if you were to put a 128mb video card in the m275 I think you would have major overheating problems.

Just a perspective thing: The difference between a 1.6Ghz and 1.7Ghz chip is a 6.25% increase in clock speed. That's not very much. The very high cost of buying the replacement 1.7Ghz top line Pentium M chip, and the time involved in replacing the 1.6, seems way out of proportion to that measly performance gain.

But then, I'm not Tim "the Toolman" Taylor.

That said, I fully support any and all such activities where it 's no the performance boost that counts so much as what you learn trying to do it. (Knowledge that is almost invariably extremely useful later on)

    :-)

I'm worried about graphics. I haven't recieved my M275 yet to test it, and running 3d games is _very_ important to me. (I work in the games industry).
I figured that since there were only two tablet models with internal DVD (even more important to me than 3d acceleration), and both had the same graphics chipset (or similar, or something), then graphics just wasn't something I could shop around for.
So I'm hoping they'll be adequate to run non-extreme 3d games, but with a fixed LCD res of 1024x768, I worry...

    hey guys,

thanks for posting. i have the m275 gateway tablet pc and i want to change the cpu chip in the motherboard. The m275 comes with a 1.6 ghz processor and i want to buy the 1.7 ghz processor and swap them. I think i can do that without changing motherboards.

    thanks

Probably, but it wouldn't be worth it.

    Absolutely not.
