Ink isn't the only alternative input for tablet PC's. I've seen a lot of topics here discussing pen versus keyboard input, but no one ever mentions speech recognition. Everyone says you can type faster than you can write. How much faster can we speak than type? I use speech recognition software on my desktop computer and it works very well. Though, to get good results I use a high-quality microphone and sound card. I assume the current tablet PC's are lacking in this area. How much success have you all had using the speech-recognition software built into Windows XP TPC edition?

The speech recognition works great! You have to thoroughly train it, but afterwards it works like a charm. I second Steve, with feeling a little goofy talking to my computer -- I do it when no one else is around (except my cats, but they know I am weird already for playing with this thing 10 hours a day anyway). Give it a try!

I haven really try it yet. You mean it can type out what we say in word documents or other prog??

I tried the office speech recognition, it did work particularly well. I use dragon. It works pretty well. Need a quiet atmosphere and some training of the program.

Not nessesarily... I type slightly faster than my natural rate of speach, and MUCH faster than I my tablet can reliably recognize speach altered to suit the needs of the recognition engine. [borg]

Also, many tablets have limited system resources (read: RAM) which makes utilizing speach recognition somewhat less practical in real-world applications.

With that said, speach is still a tool that belongs in many user's arsenal, but we've still got a way to go before it starts becoming much more than a curiosity/novelty.

That's just my opinion, of course.
