Default Looked through all the posts here with the word

Looked through all the posts here with the word "internet" and saw some CLOSE to my problem.... but to no avail.

Have the TC1000; it shows connectivity to my Dell PC via the Netgear--so it works--and vice-versa--but cannot get onto the web through this PC. Is the issue with XP tablet? IE on the tablet? Network settings on the PC? Answer is probably "yes," but any pointers appreciated.

You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on your Dell PC. I'm assuming you're running Windows XP Home on the Dell? Look in Windows Help for assistance on enabling Internet Connection Sharing.

You'll want to look into a wireless router or access point for the future.

Sorry Sergio, but I don't think that's it. I tried the exact same setup. I have a similar setup working with a linksys PCMCIA card and a win2000 laptop hardwired to the net and it all works via ad-hoc.

Tried the netgear usb connector to my desktop (also win 2000) at home and they link up ok. I can share files and the printer. However for some reason set up as ad-hoc with internet connection sharing enabled and the tc1000 set to dhcp I get no IP. I couldn't figure it out and gave up. Everything looks exactly like the linksys setup to the laptop. I wonder if for some reason the netgear usb wireless NIC won't deliver an IP?

Start by making sure your primary internet connection on the desktop is being shared and go from there Alex.

Admittedly, swag, I know only what I've read about Ad-Hoc wireless networking (i.e. I've never used one or setup an Ad-Hoc wireless network.). But, in reading your reply something struck me as odd.

With every ICS I've ever setup, I've used static IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range. Also, having the ability to share files and printers, but not surf the web makes it sound like you've got TCP/IP and IPX/SPX (or NetBEUI) protocols running on your network.

If ICS isn't setup properly, then I could see you having the ability to share files and printers via TCP/IP, and not be able to surf the web, but if you're not getting a DHCP address on your Tablet, then you have to be using another network protocol (IPX/SPX or NetBEUI) to be sharing files and printers. The IP address puts you on the network; the ICS computer acts as your gateway to the Internet. However, no DHCP address means you're not on the TCP/IP network, even if other stuff is functioning.

I won't even mention the craziness involved with security between Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro on the Tablet. [xx(]

I found this site, http://www.hardavenue.com/reviews/adhocguide.shtml, which has an excellent explanation for setting up an Ad-Hoc network. Maybe this well help all those in need.

You are absolutely right. IPX is getting the printer and file sharing going. However for some reason TCP/IP does not want to work right with the particular wireless NIC in question. I tried a static IP and TCP/IP and neither worked. I have the exact same setup on another machine with a PCMCIA Nic and it works fine.

When going from XP to Windows 2000, there are a number of security concerns that can be a pain in the neck to put it mildly. Check to make sure you have the same user ids and passwords on both machines. Also, you may have the Guest account enabled on the Windows 2000 machine setup that is working, and disabled on the machine setup that is not functioning.
