It almost sounds viral. Are you running virus protection software on your tablet? Have you scanned the boot sector to see if it is infected?

I have a strange boot problem with a TC1000 that's been
driving me crazy for weeks. I'd really appreciate any
help you can offer.
The tablet fails to boot. It shows the graphic "Compaq"
powerup screen, then switches to text mode with a
blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen
for a few seconds. After that, it returns to the "Compaq"
screen. This loop continues until I turn the power off.
No error messages are ever displayed.
However, I am able to boot successfully from a USB-attached
floppy drive. Now comes the weird part: once the tablet has
booted successfully from the floppy, I can disconnect the
floppy drive, restart the machine, and it will reboot
normally. Even if I choose "Turn off computer" from
the logon screen and let it turn off (no blinking
light on the power switch), the machine will reboot
without the floppy successfully. I can even remove the
battery from the tablet for a few minutes, put it back
in, and it will boot.
However, if the tablet sits powered off for a long
period of time -- typically overnight -- it will not
boot again, having reverted to its infinite boot loop
behavior.
I have restored the boot sector and MBR using Recovery
Console. I have compared NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM on
the tablet to known-good copies and they are fine. I have
used BIOS setup to enable the text mode startup screen,
and no error messages are displayed during BIOS startup.
I have enabled and disabled hibernation, and get the same
result.
As you might imagine, this is pretty frustrating. At least
a half-dozen times I've thought I've fixed the problem,
only to have the machine fail to boot the next morning
when I've gone to use it.
Can anyone think of anything that the machine needs to
boot that it's getting during the floppy boot, but
would "decay" overnight, preventing booting?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi All, I had about the same problem (~3 mths ago), the TC1K was looping at start...
I can remember I unhooked it thru System/Reg (HP advice)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\WPAEvents
(I lost something in XP PRO product key ?)
With a good boot, could not the binary values in this address be reset ? Or is it possible to restore a valid wpa.dbl in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 ?
Any help from MS spe******ts ? Good luck, Bernie.
