    Default problems after upgrading to Vistaq

    Hi All,

    I recently upgraded to Vista and finally got all of my software installed. After running the new OS for about two weeks my hard drive suddenly failed.

    I woke up from a nap to find my tablet continually rebooting to the screen witht the options to reboot in safe mode, last know good configuration or start windows normally, among others. I tried them all and none worked.

    It then suggested i put the vista dvd in and try to repair the software. that didnt work. i then tried to do a clean install with my xp tablet cds. this was no big deal at the time becuase i have all my important data backed up. so i deleted the partition and was creating a new one when it got half way through the partitioning process and then stopped and said it could not finish due to a hardware problem and to contact the manufacturer. So at this point i thought i was pretty much screwed.

    i then took my tablet to the technolgy services people here at Lehigh and turned it on for them. this is when the problem appeared to get worse. now when i started it up it would give me some message about not finding the media or something. the tech guy told me that was referring to the hard drive. i left the computer with them and he said he was going to run some tests and that he would get back to me in a couple days. he said the hard drive may have failed and i might need to get a new one. he then asked if i had the extended warranty. of course i didnt. he then told me that was a bad idea from the start because those things always pay for themselves.

    anyways it will cost probably around $200. thats great...

    Anyone else ever encounter this problem. I have the x41 1869-5cu.

    i had to replace my hard drive all most a year ago. it started to make a clicking sound. luckly i still was under a waranty and got it replaced for free. its was not hard to replace the hard drive by yourself so you might want to look into that.

    Hey,

    I went back to the computer repair department at my school to see what the condition of my tablet was. They had not done anything yet but but once I asked some questions the ball started rolling and they made some phone calls.

    They first called up the company they typically buy the hard drives from. I believe it is called ZT Group, based out of NJ. They did not carry the hard drive since the one used in the x41 is some special smaller hard drive.

    They then decided to call up Lenovo and check to see what they could do. Lenovo was extremely helpful. They took the basics, model, serial number, etc... Turns out my tablet is under warranty until next year. Apparantly I have the three year limited warranty.

    They said they will send me the new hard drive and I should receive it in one to two business days. Also, since the computer tech guys are ibm certified everything is covered by the warranty.

    This just made my week 100x better. I can not believe I forgot I had the extended warranty or maybe Lenovo just screwed it up. I should be up and rolling again in one to three days.

    I had the exact same set of symptoms a while back. It took a few tries, but I was eventually able to format the drive (it took something like 8 hours) and get Windows reinstalled. I did eventually have IBM replace the drive just to be safe.

    Also, if I recall correctly, 3-year warranty was the default option when I ordered my X41T. So, follow the previous poster's advice to double check warranty status with Lenovo.

    I'd like to note that my harddrive also failed after installing windows vista on it. I think the indexing service it runs is too aggressive for the poor little drive to handle.
    Nothing could fix it, not a reformat, fdisk, reinstall, or anything.

    Until today. I put in a linux live cd and ran dd (I believe it is dd /dev/zero "insert your device's mount id here (but make sure to unmount the device first)" which low level formats the hard drive and restores it to the factory defaults. Along with restoring to the factory defaults, I think it also marks any sectors which can not be restored as bad and just eliminates them from the hard drive essentially.
    It's what the hitachi drive fitness tool should have done, but for some reason chose the x41t harddrive as one of the few it doesn't work with.
