    Hey All,
I just bought a TC1000 on Ebay for a great price, unfortunately the add for the tablet wasn't specific enough to confirm whether or not Wi-Fi is built in. I know that some models are not configured with Wi-Fi built in and cost less.

Question is...if I find out that my model does not have Wi-Fi built in, can I upgrade to get 802.11x access?

If so, through whom and how much?

If not, anyone wanna buy a slightly used TC1000 for cheap? ;)

    thanks for your help

There are some links to wifi on my website and some instructions on upgrade too. If the TC1000 did not come with wifi installed there is a big chance the antennae are present - so you can plug in a minipci card and work (although some units were released with no antennae) - be aware if you don't get the combo modem - wifi card from compaq you will have to lose the modem card to plug in a generic wifi card.

Thanks Jamescj, I'll be checking your site out. I'm glad to hear that I have options.

Thanks for the info. Since mine came without the wi/fi card, I'm in the same boat, though I just plugged a Linksys pc lan card, but I would like the integrated option. Too bad Compaq isn't selling the card, or are they?

That doesn't sound too bad Mr. Z. I have a wireless G card from Linksys that I've been using on my laptop. Is that the type of card you're using on your Tablet? If not, whixh type are you using and how does it perform?

If I could do that, it would be an easy way to get 802.11G wireless without performing any oprations on the device.

On a second thought it isn't that bad, I agree. That way we don't loose the phone modem functionality.

Roboranx, I'm using a Lynksys WPC11 Instant Wireless adapter, PC card. Although if you are interested, I think that the compact flash version of the thing would be less obtrusive. You can find both models here:

I also believe that you can buy both models online by amazon.com.

    Hi,
I decided to have a go to WiFi as well, just to experiment.
While in the US, last week, I bought a PCMCIA Belkin 802.11b card for $39.90 (after rebate).
I am a newbie on this...
I tried the card on my TC1K at different locations just to see what happens (I do not have a wireless network at home) and got conected to foreign networks on a couple of occasions.
This is all I noticed it does...
I do not know how to configure my internet browser to use an occasionnal network on the fly, for example.
    Can anyone help me?

By the by, following this last piece of news, you will understand my interest:

    "WiFi News This Week

    1. Paris Goes Wi-Fi
Paris could soon become the first large wireless city in the world, if all goes as planned. An initiative backed by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Cisco Systems and the agency that operates the Paris Metro plans to install Wi-Fi hot spots at all 372 of the city's Metro stops, linking them with fiber optic cables already available in the Metro tunnels. Currently, the service is available at about 12 Metro stops, and along a major north-south bus route. Until June 1, access to the service is free. After that it becomes a subscription service for which prices have not yet been set. (Source: International Herald Tribune) - more info"

And, yes, I live in Paris, France!

    Very cool Bernard, congrats!

Windows XP Tablet handles the wireless connection with its =zero ground= utility. You need to get to the range of a hot spot, then the connection configures itself. But I recommend you get a wireless internet connection at home. Buy a router with wireless LAN and you're set to go. I have one of those at my home and at my office.

    Thanks Mr.Z

But how do I do it in the street, if I find an hotspot? How do I connect to the internet through it? How do I configure Internet Explorer to connect through it?
And, by the way, what is this =zero ground= utility?
I installed the software that came with the Belkin card...
