Is the build-in microphone good? Does it produce loud and clear records?

How is the speech recognition (which is part of windows xp tablet edition) working with the build-in micro?

    Any experiences with ViaVoice10?

And: Does the TC1000 recognize a hand written paragraph sign ("§")? (Ink to Text)

    Thank you for your answers

The built-in mic is alright, but fairly good by built-in mic standards. You can get decent recordings out of it, but the usual caveats apply (it doesn't like background noise, or soft speaking, but then again, few mics other than nice headsets do). The speech recognition isn't very useful at all with the built-in, at least not to me. I find myself having to yell at the thing over and over to get it to do/recognize what I want (and what I want, frankly, is to have Majel Barrett-Roddenberry speak back to me and the computer to read my mind and do things I don't explicitly tell it to do, but its not the 24th century). Haven't used ViaVoice10, sorry.

As for that symbol, also, no clue. I haven't (ever I think) used it, but I would say that whatever standard characters aren't in the library you can "program" into it, as well as gestures and such. If you're familiar with them, it can even pick up Graffiti-like and Pocket PC input gestures instead of just picking up handwriting.

    Thnx.

It seems to me that the TC1000 is more a toy than a professional tool. I have read about all the problems with the TC1000 in this forum. I don't want to be a beta-tester for tablet-pc's. I have learned my lession with the Apple Newton. This thing was a pain in the ass. However i was young and had a lot of time. I have wasted so much time with this world-first pocket computer (in the year 1992). I don't want to repeat that. I think i shoult wait for the next generation of tablet pcs.

I am a software developer and I use the TC1000 as a tool. It has completely changed the way I work and communicate with my customers.

I even run ColdFusion, IIS, and SQL server on it to do development off site when needed.

The problems in the forum are all mostly trivial. Everyone at my office has one and nobody, other than me, is into tweaking their tablet for performance and they use their everyday. It's hard to imagine working without them.

However, the second generation of the TC1000 is going to be out soon. It has some newer bells and whistles that I'm sure you're read about. So you may want to wait for that reason.

I am just saying that the TC1000 is nowhere near a beta. It's a solid machine. I would recommend it personally.

You know the only decent built-in laptop mic which I've ever seen with any quality has been Apple's powerbook. Everything else I've used has been next to useless for dication or recording. I wonder what they're doing right.

Feel free to wait, but if you keep waiting, there will always be something new and better on the horizon. The platform is more than stable now. I agree that the issues you are reading about in these forums are purely us geeks getting nit-picky. I use mine as the everyday machine in my financial planning practice. In fact, we have plans to upgrade all of the office machines to HPQ TPCs upon the next release.

My company too... Every employee carries a TC1000 into battle, if it's accounting, networking issues, or software development (depending on the person), the TC1000 is one of those things that changed the way we work and now is something that is hard to work without.

    (sounds like a commercial, eh?)

But then again, maybe it's just having a tablet PC in general, but I really like the TC1000 compared to the units I've played with at retail stores.
