TabletPCs are not ideal devices for all people. You may or may not like them. Spending $3000 (Tablet, 2 extra batteries, 1-2 extra styluses, battery charger, 1-2 extra AC adapters) and it not working out is a risk.
Other issues: Tablets have a learning curve. Learning what software you'll need takes time as well. Researching the different softwares and how to use them will take time.
So ... my advice:
(1) buy a cheap Tablet today. Something 3-5 years old on eBay. Look to spend say around $400. With this .. get to know what tablets are like. Learn what features you like and what features you might want in a tablet. Learn how to use a Tablet in a Classroom setting ... try to use just a Tablet in say just one of your current classes. Start researching Tablet software. Start learning how to *IMPLEMENT* the software. You don't want to get good at using your tablet by Midterms - it'll be too late. What tablet for this use ? Depends on what you want to spend. Toshiba M200s are pretty good and pretty cheap. You could either re-sell the item on eBay in the Summer ... or keep it as a backup. A bonus of the M200 is that I think they run Windows 7 quite well. There may be some benefit in using the OS on your "Feel it out" tablet as you will in your Future "Dream" Tablet.
(2) Buy your Future Tablet in July. Early enough before school to learn how it'll work but not too soon (Expensive Tablets are likely to drop $300+ in that time Frame (Feb to July).
(3) You'll want a desktop anyway. Tablets are mobile devices. Well, that's how I feel anyway. But then again I have 4 tablets and 12 deskops :)
I think alot of schools distribute classroom notes on .pdf. With this in mind you might want to see how .pdf annotator or PDF Revu would work for you.
Don't rule out paper. A tablet won't make you a better student. Studying will. And last but not least, don't drink directly out of the keg. Even though your friends are counting the seconds you are drinking .. and it seems like fun ... you'll pay to hefty a price ... Puking at 7:30pm is too early an exit for a good evening.
