Default Upgrading Hard Drive on LE1700?

Has anyone tried upgrading their HDD on the LE1700? Mine is presently 80GB. Toshiba makes a 240GB and 120GB 1.8" ZIF drive. Just looking for some experiences. If none, then we plow ahead!

John Hill, have any of your techs upgraded a LE1700 drive to a higher capacity?

The more I read the more I don't know:

Toshiba make a ZIF MK2431GAH 240GB as I understand it, it might not be compatible with Windows-based PCs because of some ATA issue.

Toshiba also makes ZIF MK1011GAH 100GB (not much of an upgrade here) which, I think, should fit.

Is is known if ZIF to SATA converter exists that will fit in the LE1700?

Maybe a solution is to just leave the 80GB HDD for OS/Programs then use 32GB SDHC for data as needed. Still, if there was some way to get to 160GB internally that would be very nice.

Is there a limit to the number of times one can write to flash memory. I'm assuming the number is smaller than the number of times a HHD can be written to.

Yes it is. The SSD drives as well as the cards have a number of write cycles before they begin to deteriorate. It was just an idea to try to expand beyond 80GB. Since the LE1700 has been on the market for about two years I would have thought someone would have tried, if possible. It's beginning to look like the 100GB is the limit for Windows running ZIF drives. I need to write Toshiba.

    Hi Paul,
I didn't intend to sound like I thought the SD card was a bad idea. I have been doing the same thing, using the sd slot for data storage. I was just wondering at what point the sd card is going to fail. 2.5" drive would be nice.

No offense taken at all. I'm of the view that SSD for storage is OK but still in its infancy and improvements need to be made. I just sort of stuck at what to do to increase beyond 80GB.

I wrote Toshiba and await see what they have to say. If their 240GB drive is OK then, great, problem solved. If not, it may be that Linux may be needed as the Toshiba datasheet specifically mentions portable Linux-based systems. I have a feeling that there is a Windows issue with the drive. We'll see.

Here we go. After much research, I'm upgrading the HDD with a Toshiba MK1214GAH 120GB HDD. Not as much additional space as I would have liked but it's enough so we'll see how it goes.

Done. The MK1214GAH is a suitable 120GB drive for the LE-1700. The BIOS recognizes it an Windows 7 is installable on it.

    Paul,
Where did you find the drive? How much did it cost?
