Excellent writeup! I'll link to it from my forthcoming W7 article.

Guys, I'm really sorry for having to link to an external site, but as my article is full of links, I just can't cross-post it here, unlike on all the mobiliy-, Thinkpad- and Tablet PC-dedicated sites I also a member at.

Please see smartphonemag.com/cms/blog/9/review-windows-7-tips-never-published-hacks for my just-published article; it contains a full tutorial to the TC1100 too & a lot of tips & hacks.

cheers for that link Menneisys. Super read :)

Someone needs to start the W7 on TC1100 wiki ;) That 'vista installation notes' entry was invaluable when first doing my setup. I wouldnt mind doing it if no one else gets around to - but i'd like to gather more info first...and hopefully get these video/media issues sorted

Here's direct link to Menneisys' super Win7 article mentioned above:

We can only hope he doesn't give up yet and continues on!

Has anyone else seen this? With the taskbar docked at the bottom of the screen in portrait mode, if I open multiple instances of a program eg several word docs or IE tabs and minimize them I cannot restore them. When I hover over or tap on the taskbar buttons I do not get a list of the open windows/web pages. Works ok if the taskbar is docked at the top or sides.

Same here. All I could do was selecting "Never combine" in Taskbar Appearance / Taskbar Buttons to "fix" this... - of course, this won't be as nice as the combined buttons.

For those that read my little blurb above. Here's an addendum

    A few days on:
For general text and writing, surfing, windows 7 beta build 7000 is still quite a pleasant experience. It does indeed seem to be a bit less bloated than Vista. However, as in most beta experiences, the features that 'need work' or further investigation on our part, begin to catch up with, and hinder day to day performance.

With VLC and 3d acceleration tweaking, you can indeed get smooth multimedia support back for all your favourite formats. WMC is still buggered for anything other than wtv/dvrms(and that isnt entirely without issues). WMP, with aformentioned tweaks, is a hit and miss affair, and has trouble keeping a steady framerate, whereas VLC does not have this issue. I might have a go at doing a vid of this later ;)

Shark007 from msfn forums, the compiler of the vista codec pack, has now released an alpha version for Win7. Whilst helpful in devices with later GPUs, they don't really do much for the TC1100. I'm yet to get around to quizzing him, but as the alpha only went up recently, theres no info on how this pack integrates (or interferes with) the new foundation Mpeg4 codecs. Im suspecting the main tweak has been in the installer, which was causing some non reversable damage when an uninstall of the VCP was initiated (if originally deployed on W7.)

The other reported issues that begin to infringe on to day performance can make W7 non viable if you need to get certain things done. For delicate text work, select and edit/drag etc- the pressure sensitivity issue can definitely get in the way. The taskbar window issue can also cause some issues when trying to skip between opened windows. This can be resolved by disabling the feature - which defeats the purpose of having it

However, even if it doesn't entirely meet ones needs for a productivity device, the beta is still worth having on a partition to continue to use and report issues to MS, as this is in the best interests of delivering a stable and useful product to tablet users upon its release. It will be interesting to see what changes happen by Release Candidate, which isnt a huge time away.

In the interim, the best we can do is continue to plug away and investigate the DX9 check/GPU and codec issues ;)

Thanks for the report Astro. For a while I was thinking of giving Windows 7 a spin on my tablet (have it running on my main desktop at home) but since I use my tablet daily at work, I don't think it is a wise idea - - at least not yet.

Got the new Samsung drive in for it yesterday so I'll focus on getting a nice lean install of XP SP3 on there with nLite instead.
