any used convertible ought to meet your needs. Your price range is fine and you just need to decide which screen size, specs you need. Since you are used to a more full-sized computer, maybe a Toshiba M200 would be the best place to start.
Hi, I was looking into buying a Tablet PC, I am a college student who cannot write at all. The logic behind using a computer in class was mostly so that I can read my notes. However, the computer I have right now is a laptop that is actually a desktop replacement, so it is completely not ideal for taking around (weighs about 12+ pounds). I was hoping to get a relatively light tablet pc that is up to 1400 but preferably 1000-1200. I would likea convertible/hybrid that has functions useful for students (although you might say I should just get a normal pc, I would like the tablet idea just for the flexibility of being able to draw diagrams from lectures, which I am much better at strangely than I am with my handwriting).
Thanks, I appreciate the help,
Ryou

Ryou,
My handwriting is terrible (and my typing is even worse) too but I coined a term here long ago about teaching my tablet my writing. It was a "Tipographical Error" - the TIP, or Tablet Input Panel can't read your writing. In essence, my tablet taught me how to write better.
I love using my tablet - I have a choice of several depending on my mood- for my classes especially with OneNote for taking an organizing my notes in.
Currently I have a Gateway CX2620 which, like your laptop, is quite heavy for a tablet, so it serves as my desktop. My favorite for class is my "upgraded" Toshiba M200. I paid very little for it but put in a faster hard drive, Upgraded it to the faster Dothan 2.0 CPU and maxed out my RAM. It actually performs quite respectably under Vista and Office 2007 Ultimate. Handwriting and pen use are great.
My other Tablet, a Fujitsu ST5010D (Daylight screen) is a bit old but since it is a slate only and I have two extended batteries, I can get a full days worth of note taking. at only 3/4" thick, and just over a pound, it is my primary "Digital Notepad".

...I think all the Stylistic 5000 series slates are ~ 3.3 pounds, not "just over a pound"...
