ST5030 Vista upgrade

Hi Forum Gurus,

I've been at this for a week or two now, and am getting VERY frustrated! I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my ST5030 to Vista. The upgrade went surprisingly well except that I couldn't sync my Sony Ericsson phone to anything (I couldn't get any of the sync software to recognise the phone). While playing around with drivers, bluetooth stacks, and utilities I got the dreaded BSOD and nothing I could do would bring Vista back to life.

After spending a couple of days trying to resuscitate Vista, I decided to re-install (the difference this time being that I installed a fresh copy of Vista because the disk no longer had a working copy of XP on it). Now I can't get Vista to recognise the internal bluetooth module. I've tried different bluetooth stacks, drivers, whatever I can think of, but nothing...

What I'm hoping is that there's some kind soul out there with a working ST5030 (or something similar) and Vista who would be willing to let me compare the two machines and try to find the driver (or whatever it is) that's causing the problem.

Well, it's been more than a week or two now, and still no joy. I find it hard to believe that there is nobody with an ST50XX tablet running Vista and has bluetooth working...

It would be really interesting to try to track this down and figure out how and why bluetooth works on one machine and not another...

Thanks for the reply and pointer Scott but I don't think the problem is which stack but getting Vista to recognise that the hardware is there. I tried installing the software that you suggested but as with the other stacks it can't find the device. I'm convinced that there's an internal conflict somewhere that is preventing Vista from seeing the Bluetooth module.

Hi Forum gurus and others,

Thought it might be helpful to update the forum on my progress.

Before I started the upgrade to Vista I checked the stated prerequisites and found the advice was to update the bios to the latest version. On the Asia Pacific site the latest bios version for the ST5030 is 1.10 (the version on my tablet was 1.07) so this was the one I upgraded to. Under XP all worked fine after this bios update but a number of things did not work correctly under Vista. Specifically: bluetooth, external display, lan connector.

After months of frustration I noticed that the European site had the latest version of the bios as 1.09 (for the ST5032). Considering the is an earlier version of the bios than what is supplied through Asia Pacific and not for my exact model, I was reluctant to use it. On closer investigating though I figured out that the only difference between the ST503* models is the screen. So I decided (with a great deal of trepidation) to try downgrading the bios to 1.09.

It works!!

In the bios setup are options to turn on and off the lan and bluetooth (which I'm sure are there in 1.10 but didn't seem to work). I just turned them on, fired up Vista and bingo - new hardware!

So, at last, I have a tablet PC running Vista that seems to be behaving the way it's supposed to.

For people with Vista installed on their ST503xx:

How is the performance for you guys? After following cameron's advice I was able to install Vista successfully on my ST5032. But I find that the performance was not adequate from the Intel 1.2GHz processor, so I went back to Windows XP. I actually did not have any real intention to upgrade to Vista, just wanted to see how hard it was to install.

One of my performance issue, was playing videos on youtube. Since youtube uses flash video compression, it actually takes a lot of processing power to play these videos. So what happened was that there were little glitches/lags when watching youtube videos. Overall the Vista system was much slower than XP, in loading softwares, in switching windows, and all the other windows stuff, it was a tad-bit slower.

I probably won't switch to Vista until I start using a ST5112.

I got the same drama, my st5020d doesnt seem to be able to find any bluetooth device after installing vista. I havent checked the bios, but will asume that its the latest. ill go and check now... but this might be usefull...
