Default I had to do a system restore without the benefit

I had to do a system restore without the benefit of a docking station. I have a Sony MDP-AP20U external DVD/CDR. Compaq system restore disks do not contain a driver for this disk. So I did a fresh install of Windows XP Tablet (not OEM) and then installed all of the compaq TC1000 drivers from the www.hp.com. Everything was running beautifully at this point. Then, forgetting who the enemy of good enough was, I installed all of the Windows updates, 31 of them. After that my wireless stopped working and no cajoling would bring it back. So I did a windows system restore to the point before installing the Windows update. Everything is running great again. Now I will no longer blithely install windows updates.

Did you install the odessey client from the hp site?

I was having problems with the wireless connection before. (Problem started when I had d-link router. Went to a Belkin router and still had problems - exhausted assistance from both companies). Finally, I spoke with hp and eventually, got it working.

They told me to install all the window update and then install the new driver for the wireless card as well as the odessey client.

At present, the wireless works just wonderfully.

    Mweiss,
I did not install the Odessey client at anytime. I did not know what it was for. (I did have the CMS 2.0 installed when my system crashed. I ran CMS 2.0 for three weeks without a problem. Now I am back to 1.00c.) Are you saying that installing Odessey after Windows update is the key?

update installed WPA on your tablet. All you needed to do was update Your router firmware to Support WPA.

kp, I am not sure if odyessy is the solution for you, but I know that it worked for me. Ever since I updated as hp instructed, everything works fine. I have had no problems connecting.

I don't blame you for being "gun shy," after your experience. Never the less, you can probably view and review the culpable component before you install. Many of the updates are good and some essential for security.

    Digitaldoc,
I wish I could but there are too many updates to evaluate when I have to restore my system quickly. Ex_Spy_Guy indicated that WPA update was the problem. Does anybody know what this is, why we need it and is it a widely supported standard. I have an old (2y) Linksys access point and I do not think that it supports WPA.

WPA is the next step in wireless security, after WEP, but you need several components for it to work - AP firmware, client card firmware, and client card drivers. All those need to be in place for the whole system to work. It's not widely used just yet, but probably will be at some point, since it's getting incorporated into chips (e.g. Atheros) and specs (802.11g and so forth), until 802.11i comes out.

"and I do not think that it supports WPA."

No biggie. just don't install the WPA update.

I reinstalled the Windows updates minus WPA. Everything works great. Thanks Guys.
