Thread: Converting X60t to Vista

    Default Converting X60t to Vista

My boss an X60t tablet here in the Office. He bought it with XP Tablet instead of Vista because he was used to XP Tablet and Vista had just come out and we didn't want to deal with all the bugs, etc. as he was also going to use it when in the office with a docking station as a workstation to our Small Business 2003 network. Also, he is used to Windows Journal and I had learned that Vista doesn't come with that (though I'm wondering if I read wrong). The reason he likes Windows Journal is what he wants to do is do a few pages of writing, then do the text conversion (but since Journal/XP does such a crappy job of it he actually has his secretary transcribe it. I've showed him how he can go right into MS Office, and as he writes each line, can do the text conversion, but he wants to as I said do a whole document in writing and then convert it.

However, he (and I) have learned that there are some advantages to Vista on a tablet; mainly that it "learns" your handwriting.

Since it is several months since Vista is out, I'm willing to re-explore it. Here are my questions:

    1) What version of Vista would I get? (My guess is Business)

    2) How easy is it to upgrade an X60t to Vista? Will anything typical "tablet things" suddenly not function?

    3) Does Windows Journal exist in Vista? If not, does the fact that I have it on there now mean that it will work with a Vista upgrade? If someone wants to do an entire document in writing and then convert it after the fact, what do they use if Journal does not exist in Vista? I'm guessing OneNote, but given what it normally costs to buy that I don't think that just comes with Vista, right?

Any help would be much, much appreciated, thanks!

I bought the *61 with Vista Business and have been using it for a couple months. As you see with "*61", the handwriting still has a lot to bam. Team. Learn. (see?)

I have suffered lock-ups almost daily and suspect Vista, although I only today reseated my memory.

Journal came with Vista, and my daughter with an XP tablet likes the new Journal a little bitter. I re-wrote better 10 times just now and Vista never recognized it accurately. Finally I printed it. 0 K, maybe I write like a doctor, but the handwriting recognition learning feature in Vista is overrated, I'm telling you. Forget about handwriting recognition as any replacement for keyboard entry except for short, structured tasks.

If I had it to do again, I'd wait for XP to come back.
