Thread: Your next tablet beyond the TC1X00?

Default Your next tablet beyond the TC1X00?

I was wondering what some of you are considering moving to now that HP has abandoned the hybrid.

Speed and battery life are becoming as issue for me. Even new batteries still seem to be eaten alive.

Both the TC1100 and TC1000 are going to be sorely missed.

What are considering for your next Tablet PC?

Whomever creates another 10" hybrid Tablet PC, gets my business. The new ones are too big, too heavy with too much whistles and bells. The UMPC is ridiculous, I can use my Nokia 9500 Communicator instead. With my TC1100 and N9500, I have everything I need for my business. Hopefully they'll last quite some time.

Mike & Brick: HP has set up a website to ask users for their suggestions for a better notebook. There's no reason why you couldn't suggest other things, like bringing back the TC1xxx form factor... See:

I have given a very hard thought after being a proud owner of Acer C112 - another 10" tablet. I have just ordered a HP Tx1222 "entertainment notebook" with a touchscreen and passive tablet screen.
Yeh, I know many have lament about its passive screen vs an active digitizer. But hear me out. I think the HP tx series might just be the breaker for tablet pcs. Think about it, most of us are into tablet NOT just for the INK. It is mobility and flexibility of input besides the keyboard and mouse (so therefore the pen stylus).

Now I think with the fierce competition in the notebook and UMPC market, PRICE vs value really matters! It is obvious by now that normal users will not fork out additional $1000 for a tablet or a smaller 12" or smaller form factor. And Microsoft lukewarm tabletpc feature support just did not help.

However, a touchscreen convertible can be very useful indeed. I started thinking when I first tried my hands on Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet X61Rt. Very good tablet, good pen but pricey still. But the moment when I tried using its touch screen suddenly strike me I need not hunt for my stylus, I need not pass my stylus around when I need others to view something on my tablet.

The second time, this strike me was when I saw the advertisement from Phillips on their LCD touchscreen-based family game panel which is laid on a table. So why can't a tabletpc be used this way. The other day I tried a board game software on my Acer tablet and yes it is a nice use except for the fact that passing the stylus around is not cool at all! So a touch screen will be VERY USEFUL in this case.

The third time it strike me was when I notice that the HP tx model has a small remote control. I first thought it is just fanfare addition but I beginning to think it could be much more but I am waiting for the machine to arrive to see how it can interfaced with other programs. But the point is there are now many important but free and good streaming videos to watch and even share with the family. Doing that on a TV screen would be best. But if anyone have tried doing so with any current notebook, one would realize the AWKWARDNESS of using the mouse or keyboard to operate the notebook PC NEAR the TV as wires connections are short and the other people audience FAR behind you. Those PC-tuner USB device with remote does not help here because we are not talking about TV programmes here. Watching TV with a family is much better taken care with just the simple TV. I am talking about nice web or your own videos which we want to share.

And the HP TX1000 series seems to have all that. What impress me the most is the weight. It certaily is not the lightes sub-notebook with 1.95kg but that is with DVD-RW drive inside! The HP TC1100 is 1.85kg but without a drive. The screen is bigger at 12" but it is only slightly bigger than my Acer because the trimming around the screen is thin.

In summary, I now felt HP's approach in putting a form-factor with mobility and veratility first before INKing is sensible. Their focus to do this with a lower price point is much more sensible than trying to those ultra-expensive but not too useful UMPC deserves respect. Because it might just be easier to sell vesatility to general users rather than the yet immature tablet inking software features.

Those artists and vertical industry like medical who needs full-blown INKing will always remain a niche and not enough to support more tablet software developers.

    10" Rules, all things considered!

If my Acer C110 (2002) had a better screen and battery, which it would have, 4 years later, it would be my ergonomic favorite today. Sure 12" is better, but so is my desktop at 30". It's called mobility, compromise and productivity!

Ride Wind - please let me/us know what sort of battery life you get with your new tx1222 - I am considering one of the new "entertainment" ones, at it really comes down to that, but I cannot find figures anywhere.
I thought I cracked it when I discovered that a nearby PCWorld had them - unplug the charger and see what Windows says - they had removed the battery!

I need a new battery for my tc4200, and more RAM, and I am considering Vista - by the time I've added it all up (£££), I am wondering if I am as well replacing it just now, all be it a bit prematurely.

    My dream machine?

A hybrid tablet pc with a SD card that takes the place of all the cd's.

The low-energy flash drives, cooling circuits (that are currently in development), no crapware, 10" 180° viewable screen, detachable or virtual laser keyboard, dual core, bluetooth, SD writer / rewriter,, IR, Wifi , trainable handwriting recognition.

These are the features for now!

    Dimensions in cm:
    Length Width Height Screen Weight(kg)
    HP Tx1000: 30.6 x 22.4 x 3.13 - 3.87 12.1" @1280x800 1.7 or 1.93 with DVD drive
    HP TC1100: 27.4 x 21.6 x 2.1 - ? 10.1" @1024x768 1.85
    HP TC4400: 28.5 x 23.5 x 3.43 12.1" @1024x768 2.09
    ACER C11x: 25.6 x 21.5 x 3.34 - 3.59 10.1" @1024x768 1.5

In a nutshell, HP Tx1000 series is the same width but longer screen but a lot more resolution. It is like a stack of A4 paper. It seems heavier but because the DVD-RW drive is built-in. When place beside many sub-notebook it seems bigger but those got smaller screens. It is a little thicker when place beside the newest Acer 12.1" notebooks but is actually lighter.

It will never replace my Acer C112 with 10.1" screen. I would also not advise using it to replace the HP TC4x00 as it has a passive screen which is not optimal for INKing. BUT it is most definitely the CHEAPEST & LIGHTEST TOUCHSCREEN notebook around. So I am buying this as a all-round machine for my wife and kids. I am going to experiment to see how a touchscreen notebook can be best utilized.
