Hey all, first, thanks everyone for the advice when I was purchasing my tablet a couple months ago. It is really appreciated and quirks aside, I love the thing.

One quirk though that is wearing on me is that the machine randomly emits a 1-2 second sustained beep that seems to come from the PC speaker (i.e., muting volume has no effect on the audibility of the beep). It seems to have no discernable cause. It happens in class, it happens at home, it can happen three times in an hour or not at all.

I was dealing with GW support for a while on this and their response was "format and reinstall." I didn't have time at the time (or a backup option for the things that were on there already), so I just left it, but it has begun to bother me as I get stares in class when it happens.

Any ideas?

Only two things I could think of:

1) Could be a high temperature alarm
2) Are you using any kind of speech recognition/voice command software? A colleague of mine has his set up where it emits a beep when its listening mode changes (e.g. he says "Computer", it responds, waits a few seconds for a command, and then beeps)

Yes it is the high temp alarm. Mine just started doing that too. I bet your processor fan is on high all the time too. If its already running on high, then you make it do a bunch of tasks, the alarm will probably sound. You need a new processor heatsink/fan at best, or you may need a whole new mobo/processor (since the processor is soldered to the board)

hmmm.... but it doesn't seem to be working hard when it does it. It just does it randomly. I'll pay more attnetion to the fan next time I hear it. Thanks for the advice. Maybe I'll have to send it in. :-(
