    Hi there from Montreal, Canada!

I am totally new to tablet pc computing and to Windows-based pc ingeneral (Originally mac-user for more than 12 years)so please be gentle with me...

Going back to school, in buildings mechanical engineering, I bought a CX2615 for note-taking and AUtocad drafting. I am toally pleased with Windows XP so far and the CX2615 in general. (I installed 2 gig of RAM, with the education grants I received).

4 days after receiving it (last week) the pen went dead. Contacted Gateway and a replacement pen is supposed to be on its way. I asked a few questions, but never got the answer from them: Does the pen just dies ? Are there batteries in it ? Could I have turned off a setting without knowing about it ?

Anyone experienced the same ? DOes someone has input on the pen problem/solution ? WOUld you by ay chance know where I can buy a replacement pen in Canada ?
(I learned today that the GW pen is backordered...)

I had the same issue with my S-7200C. The pen didn't die but it was just wigging out on me. I don't believe the pen has any batteries or has to be turned off in any way. You definitly didn't do anything wrong. I called them last Friday and received my replecement pen on Monday. Everything is 100% better now. Don't worry they're probably $2 pens made overseas. Hope it works out for you and enjoy the tablet....

    Thanks for the encouraging words.

You're lucky to get the pen so quickly. I don't foresee this being the case up here in Canada...

    That is really annoying though.

Upon closer examination, there seems to be some rust at the top of the pen in-between the cracks of the protubeance that locks the pen in the machine holder. I thought it might be batteries leaking... Don't know.

Can't wait for my replacement pen!

The pen does have a battery in it. It should have a lifespan of about 5 years or so tho

    Just a quick update:

14 days and counting and still no pen !!!

I was told by GW that : "Please do not reply to this message as we are aggressively researching
the issue/question and an additional reply from you may delay our
    response."

    Great service.... Not.

Hmmm, if the pen has a battery, I wonder if anyone has figured out a way to open it up and see if the battery inside is just a regular battery that you can replace rather than having to buy a $50 pen sometime down the line.

You cannot open the pen and replace the battery - and it's not a "regular" battery that can be replaced. The life expectancy of the pen is about 5 years, but even if you have to get a replacement pen every 2 years, it shouldn't be a problem. And I'm sure they'll crop up on ebay over time and cost less than the $50 ebay is asking.

Has anyone actually opened and checked to see what battery it is in the first place ? There may always be the slight possibility that its an odd battery that Radio Shack might carry :-).

StrainX, I think you should be the first :)

I'm all for saving myself some money, but consdering how the pen is made (with the appearance that once you get it apart, you can't get it back together), I don't want to be the first to test this theory and find out I need to actually buy a new pen. I highly doubt anyone else is willing to test it out.

As a matter of fact, there was a thread recently about getting the pen wet and drying it out. Not one response suggested taking the pen apart. Admittedly, this was a general question and not specific to the Gateway CX series, but that should answer your question. Here's the link:

If you do decide to open yours up, let us know what you find out.

Hehe, I think I'll wait until its dead to open the pen and see, so that theres nothing to loose :). Then again, I think others here have already had dead pens. Perhaps someone here with a dead pen should open up it up and see :).
