Asked in the "First Impressions with Tablet OS" thread, I figured I'd start a new thread to answer this question.
The only work around I know of is to drop the processor speed and voltage (relating in slower clock speed of course). This naturally results in longer battery life as well. I use SpeedSwitch XP (free) to do this when needed.
The Averatec C3500 Tablet users developed a method for this because the C3500 battery life is crap, so they developed a process using three programs which they call the "Power Trio." Their primary reason was to extend battery life, and had the side benefit of running cooler, but you could certainly do it for the opposite reasons (to run cooler, and as a side benefit get longer battery life).
Like I said, I only use SpeedSwitchXP out of these three, but here's a link to instructions on using the "Power Trio": http://www.averatecforums.com/showthread.php?t=1588
