yes, i use a powered desktop drive in an enclosure for Ghosting my drive, and a self powered US> B laptop drive for extra storage - i did just order a drive caddy to replace my optical drive as well
Cool, because I defenitely need more space. I found some cool looking portable external drives I was thinking about getting.
What is a drive caddy?
unit that will hold a hard drive and allow it to fit into the optical drive slot

Just a caution.
I have read-and it appears to be confirmed in the description at Toshiba's website-that the drive caddy will only work with Toshiba's select second hard drives. Not a problem in itself, until you check the prices Toshiba charges for their drives. Yikes! I paid less for a 100gb 7200 RPM Hitachi SATA internal drive than Toshiba charges for their 60gb 5400rpm second drive.
If you want massive amounts of storage cheap and don't mind the external drive being a little bigger than a standard laptop external drive than I recomend getting a USB 2.0 harddrive enclosure kit. This allows you to put a standard ATA (IDE)harddrive in it and it than act like a portable drive. I have a 200GB drive in my enclosure kit and for backing up my Toshiba m200, it's great.
Drive enclosure kit costed: $10
Harddrive costed: $140
I will confirm this in a few days, but there is nothing different with the drives toshiba sells than a regular laptop drive. I confirmed that the adapter is included with the housing at the time of order. so I should be able to use any laptop drive i have... I will let you know.quote:Originally posted by newst

I'm thinking of getting a 250GB external hard drive to archive apps, music etc. Probably 5", can't seem to get 2.5" drives over 100GB but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I was orignally going to archive my stuff onto dual-layer DVD-Rs. How do these formats compare in terms of long-term reliability. I know HDs fail after certain amount of use but if you don't use it every day it should last for quite a while, say 5 years? I have found that DVDs can scratch but thats because I keep them in spindles - not a great idea.
