I use MSN desktop search with the PDF filter plug-in. It searches all of my OneNote files, OCR'd pdfs, e-mails, etc. I don't know what issues others have had with MSN versus Google (I had both installed and uninstalled Google because I was happy with MSN...).

I just installed GDS on my tablet, and it seems to be working fine. I can search inside my OneNote files.

Here are the installation instructions. I found these while looking into adding MindManager maps into iFilter.

Setup file is a self-extracting archive that must be downloaded and opened on the machine where you run Google Desktop Search. Google Desktop Search must be running during installation. It is recommended to install IFilters you will be using before installing IFilterShop Google Desktop Search plugin. During installation you will be asked to enter list of file extensions that should be indexed by this plugin. This list will be saved in "extensions.dat" file.

If you need to change this list after installation you can either reinstall the plugin or:

1. Go to the directory there IFilterShop Google Desktop Search plugin was installed (C:\Program Files\IFilterShop\IFiltershopGdsPlugin by default).
2. Edit "extensions.dat" file in any text editor using space as separator.
3. Unregister IFiltershopGdsPlugin.dll using regsvr32 /u IFiltershopGdsPlugin.dll command.
4. Register IFiltershopGdsPlugin.dll using regsvr32 IFiltershopGdsPlugin.dll command.

For me, I had to run the regsvr32 command from the iFilterGDSPlugin directory for this to work.

Just a side note for those of you using Google Desktop Search and who also have exchange email systems with outlook as their client software. Please either run Outlook 2003 in cached mode or turn off email indexing in GDS. Otherwise, GDS will try to index email directly on the exchange stores and thrash the server.
