Did I understand correctly, only IBM DVD hardware will work? Is that only to make it run without a power cord? Can't I buy a cheap CDRW/DVDRW and plug it into the wall to have some optical functionality? Has anyone found a solution other than ordering Lenovos?

No, you did't understand it correctly :D People are mostly concern about the portability and buying the Lenovo stock, they don't have to carry the AC adapter brick with them. If you don't need to carry the DVD drive with you, I don't ;), any cheap DVDRW in any external USB box will work. It will also be faster and less picky with the media than the Lenovo stock. I got the NEC DVDRW for less than $45.00 @ NewEgg and the USB box for $20.00. I can burn and boot from it.
