I let my M1300 run down until it automatically shut down. I waited until morning to recharge my battery. After fully charging it I tried to restart my computer and got the following message.

The system could not be restarted from its previous location due to a read failure.
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.

What should be my next action?

    Sounds like a failed hibernate.

    The following should work:
    Get to a command prompt
You can try hitting F8 while but I don't think this will work.

You'll have better luck booting from a USB floppy drive with a DOS boot disk. You might have success formatting a usb flash drive as a system disk.

Then delete the file hibersomething.sys It should be equivalent in size to the amount of ram you have.

Without that file, your reboot should go smoothly.

Can I boot from the Motion restore disks?

You might be able to get to the repair console from there and then remove the hibernate file, but I have no way to confirm this at present.

Well... not with the Motion-supplied recovery disks! It's completely scripted to take the user directly into a complete factory reload.

You need to find a "normal" WinXP disk... it doesn't matter if it's the Tablet PC flavor or not.

I have actually run into a problem similar to this with my M1400. When it happened to me, I just followed the option to delete the restoration data and continued. Basically I lost everything that I didn't save before I hibernated (which really equated to nothing). Everything seems to be running fine now.

    Chris,
I also ended up with the option to delete the restoration data but had to wait until I got home to use my keyboard. Is their any way to do this without a keyboard?

Um.. I just used the tablet directional pad.. If you press in the middle, it acts as Enter.. (It CAN be kinda tricky to get it JUST right so that it registers correctly)

I've gotten this error on occasion, and deleting the restoration data doesn't hurt the system at all. You may lose any work you had if you are getting the error message after hibernate or standby, but it WILL boot up.

Do like Aristotle said, and press the directional pad down in the center. Then it should boot with no problem.
