Default So I'm getting my new X41 up to speed, and I've

So I'm getting my new X41 up to speed, and I've been surprised by how much memory is being used. Granted, I'm coming from a Windows 2000 system, but my memory footprint sits around 620mb with my normal programs minimized:

    Outlook
    Firefox
    OneNote
    Trillian

    Minor Programs:
    Google Desktop Search
    Hotsync manager
    Norton AV
    Other IBM core security features

Is this about normal? When I ordered the tablet I thought:"Oh, 512 should be fine for now" But geeze, 620 at the ready state seems kinda high.

What does your all's sit at when you're using it?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure which of the memory usage numbersyou're referring to. This is typical for me, running IE, Outlook, McAfee AV, and a few Systray applets on a Fujitsu ST5022 with 768mB of RAM.

67.51KBThat's comparable I guess. XP just has more overhead they I'm used to. Thaylss for the reply. Time to look at RAM prices I guess :)

I'm not sure I'd put NAV and Google Desktop Search in the minor program category regarding how they affect the footprint you are looking at. They both eat a bit of memory. I recently got rid of NAV when I did a rebuild.

Here's my footprint on the M200. Two shots the first is fully loaded as I usually go through the day.

    Image Insert:

    10.06KB

The second is without ActiveWords and the ActiveWords Inkpad.

    Image Insert:

    10.01KB

With Norton I was well over 600.

I'm usually hovering just shy of 600 MB until I start loading the heavies like Visual Studio, Photoshop, Flash and then it starts up floating up towards 850 MB - 1 GB.

As an interesting note, I also have a relatively "virgin" TC1100 with very few apps loaded and no AV software. She's sitting at 218 MB used.

I'm in the process of loading apps, so I'll see what happens, particularly when I add McAfee.

Interestingly, when I upped my RAM from 1GB to 1.5GB the RAM in use at idle also increased (according to Task Manager and FreeRAM XP Pro) from about 450-550MB in use to 500-650MB in use with the added RAM. But I also noticed less paging to VM, maybe XP dynamically uses RAM as available.

This is my RAM usage with just Avant Browser running, with Outlook and Word 2003 running you can add another 75mb.

Bah why can't I insert the image :(

Yes, XP does use more RAM, if you have more RAM and it would save paging.

Also the Tablet edition of XP uses 50% to 75% more processes. I sitting here on XP Pro at 35 processes (5 of them apps), and 372,192 commit charge (IE, Acrobat Reader, and PerfectDisk make up 115,200 of that).
