Default Ok, so my company has just purchased 2 HP/Compaq

Ok, so my company has just purchased 2 HP/Compaq TC4200's. With the stock build i have to say I'm fairly impressed by them. I've seen a few other Tablets, but I've never had a chance to really test them out. This one is nice.

That being said, I'm not a big fan of OEM setups in a corporate environment, who is? So, I take our copy of MS Windows XP Tablet edition that we have just received from our good friends at MS. I pop it in, I format the HD and reinstall this version of windows.

I'm having some big issues with it. First I found out, that HP's application disk will not run on it. You have to manually install everything. This does not bother me, but alarms started going off. I cannot get the Q Util to load, and the Wacom Digitizer / Tablet / Pen does not work one bit.

So as of right now, I have a Tablet PC that is configured as a watered down laptop.

Any suggestions on gettig this thing to work properly without using their setup?

    Hi rjkc17,

You are the author of your own misfortune here. You're probably better off to just use the OEM setup and remove whatever offends you. You could spend hours trying to go the other way.

Given that there is no retail version of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, it is understandable* that no one has gone to any lengths to make it 'easy' to build up from a 'bare install'.

*People starting off with generic version of the operating system are going to be in the minority.

Having said all that, it should be possible to download everything you need from the HP drivers support page for your machine.

I was terribly affraid that you were going to tell me that :(. It's not really that much that their extra software is that bad I guess, I just like making images and setups out of clean installs, not something coming from a company you know?

Oh well, if anyone has had success loading their own, please let me know. For now, I think I"m going to have to go with what you just suggested. Thanks for the quick reply.

    Hi again rjkc17,

It looks like you are not alone with the QMenu issue.

If there *is* an issue, it may take awhile for HP to fix it. In the meantime, if you want to have a functional machine the fastest route is probably to use the OEM image.

Hey, I almost forgot - Welcome to the Buzz.

BTW... I was able to install all the drivers and such, I think the part that is holding me up is this QUtil. I think it controls the tablet and pen. Whenever I try to run it, it says "this application is not compatible with this operating system" bastids. :(.

I think I'm going to reload this system with the defaults and go from there. I am about 98% of the way to "throwing in the towel".

Thank you very much for the welcome. I was reading these forums for a while trying to decide which tablets to go with. Ends up my opinion didn't matter anyway. Thank you for all your help and advice.

To top it off, the HP service and support site will not link off the page for the tablet. You click on it and it's a link that is either inaccessible or not there. Wonderful.

With the 4200, there are two DVD's that came with the system. Are you referencing the first of those two as the one that you used to do a "clean" install of the XPTPC edition? I had no problems inserting disk one, wiping the HD and installing a base XPTPC and then picking and choosing the drivers that I wanted to install from the HP website. I did not use disk two at all. I have done it twice so far with great success and a very quick system!

No, I wanted to use the XP Tablet Edition from Microsoft, not the OEM one from HP and start from scratch that way. Turns out that this isn't going to work out, so I've done it the way you have experienced. That obviously works perfectly. I just hate OEM setups, as in general I don't trust them. Thanks for the input.
