Thread: Motion with detachable keyboard vs. IBM tablet..

I was fairly unimpressed by the pictures posted here (on the motion forum) of the VA screen, and writing on glass just didn't sound too appealing. Plus I just don't need to be outside working with a computer. So without the VA option, in a minimal configuration the price difference is more like $500. The options for Motion are basically all more expensive than Lenovo, so if you load it up the difference gets bigger.

Yeah, I understand the difference between a slate and a convertible. I was dead set on a slate for a long time, then I thought, why? If I end up needing a keyboard a lot, there ends up being no weight difference (or 0.5lbs with the larger battery). Worst case, I am carrying around 16% more weight than I need to be. It's not a lot.

You can get the Motion on a 48-hour trial from one of the vendors - Alltp? Not aware of any stores that are carrying either of these anytime soon. I agree it would be nice to at least hold one. It's the first time I've bought a notebook sight unseen.

I do think the Motion looks nicer, and is 'cooler'. And I have a soft spot for the underdog. If I were sure to be happy with a slate, I'd definitely pay the extra, since it's just not that much money in the scheme of things.

I frequently need a keyboard, so a convertible is obvious to me. The Motion looks great if you know you won't need a keyboard. I bet Paris is waiting for her convertible like everybody else, and before you can shake a digitizing stylus it will be Carl's Jr. time on late night TV and the web. Break out the catsup!

I took the Motion over the IBM.

Obviously I've been a Motion devotee for a while, but I really feel that LE is as close to perfect for a tablet that's been released.

The thing about a detachable keyboard is that you can bring it with you, but you don't have to CARRY it. If you are carrying a computer around you more than likely have a bag with you. If the keyboard is in your bag the weight it snot in your hands. This sort of modular design really jives with me and the way I work.

Additionally, I have strong ties with Motion and know them as a company. If I have an issue with my tablet I know who I need to talk with to get things fixed. Likewise, Motion has a rep who actively posts on these forums and has since the first generation of tablets (clear commitment to the community). I've also talked with many Motion employees who actively read the Buzz.

Looking at the new LE, it is clear that they have been reading our praise and our complaints. If you look at the LE, just about every niggle with the previous set of tablets has been fixed. Better pen, better keyboard, more battery life, battery layout of ports, memory card reader, ability to power an optical drive directly from tablet, lighter, thinner, faster. Even customer support issues are being taken care of. For the LE you can FREE 3-way shipping if you have to send in your tablet. You call for an RMA, they ship you a box, you ship the tablet in the box, they ship it back. All 2-day express.

Motion's commitment to and understanding of the tablet platform will keep me coming back to them.

I should say that the X41 is a very nice machine. I actually have a sizable discount on it through my internship this summer and I have considered purchasing one, but I think I'll hold off.

I am on phone with IBM and they tell me that this machine has NO MICROPHONE built in... only a mic jack. What's up with that??? He said he is sure of this... and I am now starting to think about the Motion more seriously. Any thoughts?

are these really the dimensions of the IBM???
    Height 0.81 in
    Depth 8.3 in
    Width 10.5 in
    Travel weight 3.6 lbs

If so... that means it is SMALLER in all respects vs. the Motion SLATE... except it's just SLIGHTLY thicker.

    See Motion specs below:
    • 11.65" x 9.45" x 0.74” - 0.87"

If this is true... then WHY get the Motion??? it's not even really smaller??

Besides the price differential and things like an attached keyboard ect., a major difference is warrantee and service.

IBM comes with a 3 year warrantee vs a 1 year from Motion. IBM also has walk in repair center in major cities. If your also interested in accidental damage protection, there is a significant price difference (IBM is much less).

Both machines are outstanding, but I personally felt better being protected. Would be nice to see Motion back their product for 3 years like the Thinkpad for no additional charge.

Oh, a negative on the basic IBM that retails for about $1899.00 is it does not have the Bluetooth that comes standard in the Motion. The IBM that starts at about $2400.00 does have it.

I too am waiting for my X41 and may have more info when I receive it.

I believe the .81" spec is at it's thinnest. It is a wedge shape and is about an inch at the back (the battery).

    Re: built in mic
This surprises me. Everything I had read shows it has one built in mic, but no array mic like the motion. (which would be a point in the motion column.)

I'm was pretty peeved about the price differnce for the bluetooth models as well, $500 for bluetooth is a little much. I'm going to order the bluetooth parts that come in those models and install it on my thinkexpress model. After seeing the cdc module, installing bluetooth will be very easy, and all for around a $100 dollars in parts.

I just fired up windows sound recorder and recorded my voice. Interesting because the mic was muted in the volume control, I'm guessing that control is for the external mic connection.

The sales rep is confused because the internal mic is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. I looked through the hardware maintenance manual, and couldn't find anything on mic parts, just the external mic port.

Anyways, there is definately a mic, not sure where it is, or how one can adjust the volume, but it's definately there.

**Edit, I think the mic is somewhere near the ext mic port.
