Does anyone here use Actual Window Manager? I'd be interested in his or her experiences. It looks useful.

    Mark,

Dennis started this thread yesterday about this.

    http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23956

It prompted me to give the program a look. I've got it installed and am giving it a trail run. It does work as advertised. I'm not sure for my purposes though if the functionality is any greater than what the Nvidia drivers already offer.

So, I'm looking at it as a cost/benefit thing.

    Warner,

In some things our approach is so similar as to be scary.
Same inputs, same thought processes, same responses to stimuli.

We're fortunate to have all that screen real estate with the M200s, so I haven't perceived quite the same sense of need around managing open windows.

On the TC1100 I tend to be more single-task oriented.

I'll be interested to read your thoughts on the program.

I had Actual Window Manager running for close to it's full 30 day trial period and had decided that it had become truly indespensible for me (windowshading and transparency in particular) and was definitely on my purchase list.

About the same time Experience Pack was released and I had failure in being able to get InkDesktop to launch. I tried every solution imaginable and discussed here and elsewhere without results.

Fortunately, I regularly archive my OS with True Image on a weekly basis, and decided to revert to earlier installs to see if I could get InkDesktop working. After the lengthy process of reinstalling each week's archive and attempting InkDesktop again and again without success, I got results immediately from the archive backup roughly 30 days old. Active Window Manager became my suspect for the failed InkDesktop installs from that experience.

Since then I have reinstalled Active Manager (after making a archive backup first) and it works and co-exists with InkDesktop without issues.

I can't say that AWM interferes with InkDesktop launching if it was installed prior, but there might have been a relationship. I would suggest backing up your OS first if you haven't yet installed Experience Pack and intend to.

In similar fashion, I couldn't get the Firefox TIP extension to install on the Firefox 1.0.2 version on my last OS, but did get it to install on the archived OS which had Firefox 1.0 still on it. And it seems that others have been able to update to 1.0.2 yet retain the TIP extension functionality. But for me, it refused to install on a fresh 1.0.2. Likewise, there might be a install sequence issue working with AWM and InkDesktop, I can't say for certain though.

At the least, True Image's 100% reliability with at least five OS restores in less than 48 hours has been very reassuring. I can't imagine not having all those backups available to make the investigation process so much less painful.

    bmhome1,

That's a great lesson and experience. Thanks for sharing it.

    WN,

I'll report back after using the program(s) more.

    bmhome1,

I've got a machine on which I have not installed the Experience Pack. So I'll give this a try to see if I can replicate the sequence.

    Actual Window Manager
    then
    Experience Pack

    Back to y'all soon.

    bmhome1,

    Just tried this:
    Installed

    Actual Window Manager
    then
    Experience Pack

Ink Desktop is okay, so maybe there was something else you installed during that month that was the issue.

How does it play with WindowBlinds? Anyone know?

    WN,

Thanks for testing that. Makes my multiple OS InkDesktop launch failures even more mysterious.

Actually I'm relieved it wasn't AWM at fault, now I can purchase without hesitation. It has always been 100% solid except for the added buttons sometimes partially covering up long header titles with short width windows, but even that can be per-window customized in the extensive options setup.

    Chris,

That is one of my questions, too. The WB skin I use gives window transparency (though not for the TIP) and rollup plus minimize to the system tray. I can't imagine two more buttons.
