Thread: pen registers false clicks at screen edges

Default pen registers false clicks at screen edges

I've had my C3500 for about 2 weeks now, and overall it's seems to be working well with the exception of my pen problem.

The issue is that my pen will register false clicks along the edges of the screen. I'm also having issues with the pen and cursor staying in sync. For instance, I have my taskbar set to autohide along the bottom of my screen. I have trouble pulling my cursor to the bottom of the screen. Frequently, the cursor will jump to the top of the screen, and it takes some waving of the pen to get to cursor to once again sync up with the pen. Once I get the cursor under control, items in the taskbar can be randomly clicked, causing programs to be launched inadvertently from the quick launch area.

That's just one manifestation of the problem. The pen is just registering click events along the edges of screen. My unit came with Tablet Edition 2005, and I have installed all of the latest drivers and I've even changed my pen battery. I have even thought of getting a new pen but I can't seem to find anyone that has them in stock. Even Averatec's site shows them as being out of stock. However, if this were a pen problem, I would think that the problem would always be present, and its only occurring along the edges of the screen, at least for now.

I'm thinking about exchanging the unit since I just got it 2 weeks ago, but I called Averatec and set up an RMA, and though that will take 2 to 3 weeks, I really don't want to deal with potential problems with a new machine. Hopefully Averatec can fix the problem if I can't find another solution.

Any ideas out there or similar experiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

I am not familar with your type of pen, but I have heard of something similar with the wacom pens. Try removing the stylus tip and reseating it. Since your tablet is new you should not need to replace the tip. Make sure your pen tip is removable, like I said I'm not familar with your type of pen. Its something easy and cheap to try before you send it back.

I had a similar problem with mine when it was brand new. In my case, I was able to fix it by taking the battery out of the pen and making sure the electrical contacts between the top and bottom half of the pen were good. The Averatec pen has a piece of metal that sticks out of the top of the pen and makes contact with the bottom of the pen when the two pieces are screwed together. You might want to check and make sure they make good contact. I had to very gently bend the metal pin outward a very small amount to make sure it made good conatct when I put the pen back together. After that the pen worked perfectly.

One of the best things about my Averatec is that he digitizer is much better than the Wacon digitizers (after I fixed the pen). It's faster, and near the edges of the screen it is much more accurate annd consistent than the Wacom digitizer in the Motion Computing and Toshiba TPCs.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Macbeth,

I tried your procedure and it did seem to help. When the unit is on AC power, the problem is almost gone.

However, on battery power, the pen is VERY eratic along the edges. I'm going to see if I can find another pen before I RMA the unit, but there must be something going on with the unit if there is a difference in the unit's performance when on battery verses AC power.

    Thanks for the tip!

Did you ever get resolution on this? I've noticed that my pen tends to register false clicks around the edges when on battery too. Maybe it has something to do with the power being applied to the digitizer on the unit - on battery they may cut the power down somewhat, making the pen less reliable...

No, I'm still having my pen problem. However, I did install the new C3500 BIOS from Averatec's website, and it does seem to help a little.

I can use my pen accurately around the edges of the screen on battery power for about five minutes, and then it starts to flake, but that's five minutes longer than before.

Yeah, I would tend to agree that it's some sort of power conservation issue dealing with running the unit on battery. If you ever find out anything please pass it along.

    Thanks.

    hey guys,
i wonder if it could be the jumping jack cursor problem as described in this thread?

you might want to try recalibrating the digitizer/pen, and the litepad fix. if those don't work it may be the shielding issue that was discussed.

Try rolling back the driver. My pen stopped working all together with the lastest driver maybe thats the cause of your problem.
