Default Hi folks, I'm considering replacing my Motion M

    Hi folks,
I'm considering replacing my Motion M1400 if I can find a tablet with a higher res display than the "standard" 1024x768 pixels

The only one I know is the Toshiba M200 at 1400x1050 but it is a convertable when ideally I would prefer a slate.

Any advice / suggestions of suitable hardware would be gratefully appreciated!
    I'm looking for (roughly)
1.1 GHz or higher (cool running)
    60Gb or bigger
1GB RAM (ideally with upgrade options)
    Bluetooth
    WiFi

    Thanks in Advance
    Tom

Only the M200 has the high res display. I have heard that the new HP might have 1400x1050 as an option, but of course that is a convertible similar to the m200.

The Toshiba is a very nice machine, though it's not ideal if your main usage is carrying it around to show stuff to people. It all depends what you will be using it for.

My advice is to simply wait. If the recent article in Pen Computing about LCD displays is substantially correct (and there's no reason to think it isn't), then we all have at least one more upgrade cycle in our future since Microsoft has declared that Longhorn will only be "optimal" on a 12" display if it is SXGA+ ! In my opinion, it would be premature to jump to a higher resolution now, before the OEM's are generally prepared to move in that direction (and therefore before there are a lot of choices available...).

Does anyone have a contact with the companies that do the active digitizers, such as Wacom? I suspect they are the limiters of when high resolution tablets will appear.

Actually... I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with the digitizer. It is more of a fact that there isn't a real high demand for high resolution on a 12 inch or smaller screen. Alot of people are more concerned that they wouldn't be able to read it. For example, my Dad has an M200 but always uses it at 1024x768 because his eyesight. Right now there isn't really technology available for OEMs to make a screen that can have more than one "prime" resolution. The M200 at 1024x768 isn't nearly as sharp of a picture as it is at higher resolution for that reason.

    The Fujitsu T4000 has a 12.1" SXGA+ hi-res, wide-angle-view indoor/outdoor screen

Spencer is correct. The resolution of the display is independent of the much higher resolution (2540 lpi) of the digitizer.

Re: the Fujitsu T4000. My understanding is that you can only get the wide angle/view anywhere at lower res.

In fact Fuj is offering three screen options:

    >Wide angle 1024x768

    >Indoor/outdoor wide angle 1024x768

    >Hi-res 1400x1050

Keep in mind that the M200 is so far still the only one with a dedicated graphics chip, so is going to be better at the operations a lot of users want the hi-res for in the first place (ie designers, illustrators, etc).

Now that Fujitsu has a hi-res 12" screen available on the T4000, maybe they'll put it on their slate ST5022. It seems like a possibility at least. I would Love! to have a hi-res slate.

Yeah. As maybe some of the oldtimers here remember, I've been waiting for a high res Motion for ages now! Well over a year. [cry]

But in the meantime, I've been "making do" with my M200. :P
