Default I just got my new Fujitsu 4010 Tablet computer,

I just got my new Fujitsu 4010 Tablet computer, and I'm having problems installing Palm desktop software on it. The installation process hangs up part way through. Is anyone aware of problems or does anyone have suggestions for solutions? I've tried Palm and Fujitsu support without any success.

[u]Welcome to the club.</u> I've complained to Palm about the quality of their software for years! Like you, I tend to get hang-ups on the install, and the Palm installation disc is equal-opportunity; I've had problems on at least 2 different Dell computers and one tablet. By the way, we're talking about a Tungsten e, here, so the software's not very old!

Best advice I can give you is to do a complete uninstall, followed by a search for any file which has "palm" in its name (Don't forget the "Palm" folder in the Program Files folder on your C drive). Also discard any profile save files, which typically get placed on your desktop during the uninstall. Don't forget to restart as part of this "cleaning" process!

Then, be sure to shut down as many processes as reasonably possible, especially your virus checker. (I've had an expert tell me that even when you disable the virus checker via the system tray, parts of it still are running... but I'm not quite that paranoid!)

Now start the install from scratch. If it hangs again, my advice would be to abort the installer, restart, and just see if it works. I had to do that at least once, and the software seemed to work OK even so. Maybe some backup files didn't get deleted, or something, but the application worked without any problems. Alternatively, you can try the uninstall, cleanup and install (again...).

Finally, don't forget to send Palm an e-mail telling them what a shoddy job they've done with this! The only way we'll get any change is if enough people complain about it...

Or download the latest desktop software from their website. I haven't had the experiences that Steve has had.

Sadly, at least one of these "problem installs" occurred with a recently downloaded version (I had the same thought that you had).

Although I didn't mention it, I've occasionally also had problems establishing the initial HotSynch connection through USB ports. Once the first connection is "forced," it will usually work OK thereafter.

HOWEVER, well-written application software shouldn't do these kinds of things. I don't know why Palm can't get it right, but they definitely have some sort of problem... and their customer base ought to let them know it...

I installed the palm desktop stuff last week and it didn't have a problem, maybe he was just unlucky.
Well written software shouldn't do that I agree, but when was the last time you installed some of that?!

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I may have found the answer on the Palm users forum. It seems that Palm One doesn't support tablet editions of windows xp. At any rate, one user found a solution that I'm going to try. Here's a link to his post: http://forums.palmone.com/pe/action/...ExpertiseCode=

I'll let you know if this works when I try it.

How odd - I installed it on my tablet and it didn't cause any trouble.

Hey, it worked for me. If you're having the same problem, just follow the link in my last post and follow the instructions.
