Full shutdown or standby (or hibernate)? This almost sounds like power management weirdness except I've never seen a system react so fast...
hello all,
I'm having a weird problem with my m1400, so thought I'd bounce it off y'all. when I power on the tablet, everything boots up fine, but then if I don't do something right away (like open explorer or notepad, whatever), the system shuts down! huh? I was thinking that it's some driver problem, but it seems strange to me that I can get around it just by opening up any program at all. has anybody seen this, or have any ideas on what could be the problem?
Thanks much, tok

Just so you know your not alone.... I had this same problem to on a different TPC. I never figured out what it was other than it wasn't a hardware issue. A fresh install fixed it.
Rebel, you mean a fresh install of Windows, right?
Tok, sorry to hear about all your problems with that Tablet!
Try this, in order to diagnose the problem:
It's from a Microsoft knowledge base article that is slightly unrelated, but following these instructions may help. Post your findings.quote:This behavior may occur if Windows stops responding during a typical operation or during the shutdown process. By default, the computer is configured to automatically restart when Windows stops responding. To view this setting, follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
2. Under System Failure, view the Automatically restart check box. If the Automatically restart check box is selected, Windows automatically restarts if the computer stops unexpectedly.

toksaun,
In terms of troubleshooting, use msconfig to make a selective start-up where you unselect all items in your start-up group. Doing so will allow you to rule in/out anything that is loading at startup. If you identify the culprit, then you will not have to go to the extreme of reinstalling the O/S. Alternatively, you can start-up in the safe-mode and see if the problem persist. I agree with Northern-Rebel that you likely have a software problem. The above are steps in isolating software problems.
Note: RE: Selective start-up, if you want to have the exact items load again at start-up, make a list of what is checked before you turn them all off.
Any progress on this, tok?
well I used the msconfig (thanks jim!), did a diagnostic startup, poked around in general but didn't see anything "weird", tried a regular boot and...no problem. hmm. I rebooted three times now with no reboots so not sure what's going on now.... I'll just keep an eye on it for a few days, see what happens. strange!

Hi tok,
Well, at least you are stable, yet you were not able to identify the reason for the shut-downs. Isn't that a bit unsettling?
yes, it's unsettling to just have a problem "disappear" like that, but it's also unsettling using the windows OS! ;)
