Default Hi guys, It’s me again. As a few of you know,

    Hi guys,

It’s me again. As a few of you know, I have recently acquired three Fujitsu Stylistic 3400 PC in various states of repair, thanks to eBay. Having toyed with stream-lining OS installs of win 2K (http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/to...TOPIC_ID=21376) I have it down to about an hour and a half {without the stupid 12 million download and reboots of getting all the windows updates}, every driver/ device working perfect.

What I have observed is that the hardware is very stable under 2K, Very stable, more stable than my desktop.

I have decided which is my “keeper” and which are to be liquidated, and I expect my new, big, kickass hard drive to arrive in the next day or so and plan on only one more install for the near future

All this has been the prep for my real question…

While I have no worries that I can get XP installed and tuned without any trouble, should I?

I am looking for some input from anybody who is running XP on a 3400/3500, forget the install, once you got it right, did it perform as good as Win2K, I understand that this old hag is only a 400Mhz, can it hang with the new dogs???

There are quite a few threads regarding the installation of XP (not the tablet edition) on the 3400 and 3500's.

From personal experience I can tell you that it runs quite well on the 3400. Better on the 3500.

Screen rotation and penmon have always been a pain on the 3400's under XP, and if you can get that nailed you are doing quite good. IMHO it's quite a bit easier on the 3500 with the ATI graphics chipset.

Once I got my configs working I ghosted the drives to a network archive. I've got fully functional configs for 98SE, NT, W2K, and XP (for both the 3400 and 3500). I can go from one setup to any other in about 30 minutes. Right now I'm certainly sticking with XP (192MB on the 3400's and 256MB on the 3500's).

I concur, getting it working is not my concern....

I am asking for votes, from people who have used both win 2K and XP. would you pick one or the other and why.

Mostly, with the limited processor and memory of the 3400 [400/192], do the beneifts of XP out weigh the increased load?

I will take your vote as XP.

I use XP on my 3400. I found it more stable than win2k. Keeping in mind the 400 processor I never tryed to make it work horse. If I really wanted to work it hard I would go back to 98SE.

I am kind of looking for something to replace my PPC, coincidentally, the 3400 has the same proc speed as my current PPC, if I can stand the increased weight/size I am hoping that it can hang and not be a dog.

The convenience will be worth the extra size and weight for the added features of a whole PC.

This decision, is strangely similar to a previous decision…I remember my excuse for switching from the palm to the PPC; “it has a full version of excel”, “and, windows shares” oddly, those are still good arguments.

Well my drive should be here in a day or two, no thanks to the eBay’r who sat on it like an egg for fifteen days between confirmed payment and shipping. “I see a little negative feedback in your future!”

Well I did it. XP went on easy as possible, the only exception was, my script for installing the SAS/ctrl-alt-del soft-hardware fouled. This was because XP´s system directory is "windows" not "winnt" as I thought.

Other than XP and Office 2003 making my 20gig drive seem a little cramped everything is running smooth.

Also, I thouoght to myself, what diversions(read games) would work nicely with a pen only. So, I installed classic Diablo with the no CD hack, works awesome. Unfortunatly, I couldn't get classic Myst to run. The hold up is that the video driver under XP will not allow me to reduce the color pallete to 256 as isrequired by the game. Any ideas?

Did you get screen rotation (w/ pen tracking) to work on the Trident?

Yeah, everything is at 100%. Of course, I still haven’t figured out case sensitivity with PenX but it does work.

    OK, maybe 99%

not every boot, i get an error dialog box:
    _________________________________________________
Fujitsu Display Monitor Application X
________________________________________________
(X) WMI Error: Error accessing class instance!
________________________________________________

This has no effect that I can detect on the operation of the system, pen, rotate, hand writing req. none.

I can't find an assiciated entry in the system log/event viewer.

I think it started with the install of Norton AV 2002. and i just noticed during live update that Norton also uses something called "WMI"

Lastly: when I shut down, I hear the little music, then the screen goes black(activly black), with just the mouse in the center. Up to 12 seconds later, the mouse pointer disapears and the screen cuts off anyone else have this under XP?

Again, I would like to blame Norton, I use Norton 2000 on all older systems, but it dosn't run on XP so i had to upgrade to 2002, i don't like it as well.

WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) is built into the OS and it's essentially a database application. I can pretty much guarantee that the problem is not being caused by your Norton install.

Is your Device Manager "clean" (no problem devices)?
