There are quite a few threads regarding the installation of XP (not the tablet edition) on the 3400 and 3500's.
From personal experience I can tell you that it runs quite well on the 3400. Better on the 3500.
Screen rotation and penmon have always been a pain on the 3400's under XP, and if you can get that nailed you are doing quite good. IMHO it's quite a bit easier on the 3500 with the ATI graphics chipset.
Once I got my configs working I ghosted the drives to a network archive. I've got fully functional configs for 98SE, NT, W2K, and XP (for both the 3400 and 3500). I can go from one setup to any other in about 30 minutes. Right now I'm certainly sticking with XP (192MB on the 3400's and 256MB on the 3500's).
