Default I have just received my 512MB memory module (RAM

I have just received my 512MB memory module (RAM) from Crucial for my Compaq Tablet PC TC1000. Happily, I plugged it into my system. To my horror, I found out that my TC1000 can only detect half the module's memory. Is the memory module faulty?[cry]

Anyone in the forums uses crucial memory and is it working perfectly?
    Thanks for the help.

    Very interesting, Laserzx!
I have personally installed 3 Crucial 512MB modules a my tablet and on two of my coworkers & they all have worked well instantly. No issues whatsoever. As a matter of fact I just intalled the last one a few minutes ago.
I would re-install, reboot & if the problem persists call Crucial 's help line.
Hope your situation resolves quickly- You'll soon be able to notice the huge improvement made by adding memory.

Hi Carlos, Thanks for the reply. Btw, did you update the BIOS on yr tablet? coz the tech support guy at Crucial ask me to update the bios and it should work. But I could not find any BIOS update for TC1000 on compaq website.

If there is really no bios update, I guess the memory modules are really faulty.

Standard tech support answer . . . from low-rent tech support.

There is no BIOS update for the TC-1000, and plenty of folks (including myself) have installed 512K RAM expansions with no problems.

What, exactly, are you seeing for your total memory now - look at both the BIOS memory reading (depress Jog Dial during BIOS test) and the Windows System (Control Panel>System or Right-Click My Computer>Properties).

I've never seen a memory chip display part of its memory - they tend to be all or nothing. If you are seeing 256K (or more likely 232K), then your 512K module is not seen by your computer. If you are seeing 488K, then your description is correct - you are either seeing half your memory module (unlikely) or you have a mis-packaged/mislabeled 256K module. Either way, you need a replacement module from your original vendor to get the 512K module you paid for.

I added a 256Mb chip set made by Compaq to my tablet, and I only see 488Mb...AND my system is running so slow, an Abacus could be a faster computational device.

What is causing the system to only see 488Mb?

    Any help is appreciated.

Hi Kupe. Thanks for replying. My system is showing 488K.
I have requested crucial to ship to me a replacement 512MB memory module. Hope it solves the prob.

    I agree with Kupe, Laserzx.
There's no BIOS update for the TC1K.
Have it replaced,if unable to be read. You've done your share (paid & given the product a fair shot)now it's time for them to stand by their product.

This is because 24MB is reserved for the Transmeta processor exclusive use and is not account for when the system counts the available DRAM.

Govdaniel, the reason you're seing only 488 is because the Transmeta procesor utilizes the other 24 MBs you're not "seeing". The amount of memory your system displays is the proper one.
Perhaps you should consider some of the adjustments quoted in some of these posts regarding performance enhancements- only if you feel comfortable with it. Secondly, keep in mind that the TC1K will benefit from memory upgrades, but IMHO a noteworthy improvement in performance requires a 512MB upgrade. Keep in mind that the minimum requirement for XP is 256MB...

Actually carlitos way, XP can be run on 128mb-16mb. That's how the old crusoe in Fujitsu P runs.
