I'd like the experts opinion on this subject:

There are upgrades on the compaq site for the TC1K.
    - Is it important to upgrade?
    - Most of these files are old and I purchased my machine by mid-january, so do I need to upgrade?
    - Won't it be more sensible to wait until newer upgrades releases?

I'm of the opinion that you should stay as current as you can stand. But, the adage "if it isn't broke don't fix it" comes to mind as well. My advice, unless a fix is fixing some problem you are experiencing, wait.

I applied to updates - the 802.11b update and the Intel Pro/100 Ethernet update. Both were to fix specific issues (echoing Big Lar's comments).

I would have to agree with BigLar on this one... I applied a bunch of fixes when I got mine and created more problems than fixed (I think the big one was video, I started getting blue screens)...

I would just apply specific fixes and then ghost your machine for quick rebuilds...

Agreed. The only exception I would make would be to visit Microsoft's Windows update periodically and do add the security and critical updates for XP. You do not have to do devices or other options, but I have found the others to be pretty stable and able to prevent certain virus', etc....

I definitely want to encourage everone to stay up-to-date on critical updates from Microsoft for exactly the reasons tabpcman said, security. It is just too dangerous to not keep up with the latest security patches.
