Hi all, does anyone have any ideas on this conundrum?

I've had my TC1000 for about a week, and it's been absolutely great, but this morning out of the blue pressing the hardware rotate button with the pen gives the message:

"the setting you requested cannot be supported. Open display in control panel, adjust the settings, and then try to change the orientation again."

I wouldn't mind if I'd changed the settings, or even installed something since it last worked! Has anyone else come up against this one? Any advice appreciated!

Hmm, I haven't seen this before. You might try recalibrating the screen in the control panel, it is possible it might have something to do with it. You might also contact HP's support to see if they have run into this and have a solution.

    Have you:

    1. Rebooted?
    2. Checked your video properties (control panel, display) to make sure your GE Force 2 Go adapter is the install one?
    3. Tried the Q menu choices to see if you can select any of the other setting?

Try making sure the rotate button is set to rotate your screen. Go to the "tablet and pen settings" in the control panel (or through the system tray icon or through the q-menu), go to the display tab, click the "change" button after the word sequence, and make sure the settings are correct. The default settings should be:
    1. Landscape - Primary
    2. Portrait - Primary
As a side note, you can also set options 3 and 4 to landscape and portrait secondary and make the button rotate the screen 90 degrees each time you click.

If this does not work, try changing your screen rotation through another method (like through the qmenu or through the "tablet and pen settings"). Do you get the same message?

    thanks for the replies guys,

and yup, I've rebooted, yup i'm sure the rotate button is set right - and the same thing happens when using the Q-menu functions too. I've checked that the Geforce2 Go is the correctly selcted vid card, and its the only one - I've just tried uninstalling the monitors and card to let it redetect it's default settings on reboot - and still the same.

Which is why I'm stumped. One thing that has occured to me from a glance at other posts here is that there is a 'mode change service' which although installed (according to add/remove) isn't actually showing up in the services list, or in the CTR-ALT-DEL processes running - could this be it do you think?

Did you ever manage to fix this? I now have exactly the same problem.

This may not be related, but I had to downgrade the Nvidia driver from 1.00c back to 1.00b. I was getting phantom clicks in journal. Since I downgraded the video driver, all is working well again.

Try to uninstall, reinstall the driver ... You can download just the driver from the Compaq site.

I did fix this eventually, I reverted back to the original driver, and then uninstalled the video card from device manager. On reboot the PC redetects the hardware, reinstalls the driver with the correct settings. If you're using the updated driver from the compaq site this won't work, you need to remove them from add/remove programs, restart and then remove the device.

It is a pain though, wish I knew what was causing it in the first place so I could avoid this fortnightly hassle!

I have had the same thing happen to my new tc1000. It turns out that at least in my case, the problem was due to PC Anywhere. Apparently it messes with the screen in such a way that the rotate doesn't believe the screen can do what it wants.

I originally installed 10.5, and the Live Update failed since I had not yet properly set up networking at that point. I then uninstalled and ran for a few days, happy just to be able to change the screen orientation. When I remembered that the live update had failed, I built up the courage to try again, hoping that the newest version would fix the problem. So far, it seems fine, so fingers crossed!
