Just a follow up form an earlier post. After trying to charge my pda from the flexdoc usb port I recieved an error message indicating the device tried to draw too much power form port. My computer hung and from that period forward the usb ports were down, the fingrprint scanner was down and my sound drivers were toast.

spent half an hour with motion suppport on the 23rd (by the way support was quick to answer and seemed to be knowledgable and based in contintental north america - my guess would be inside the U.S. judging by the accent).

Anyway after attempting to reinstall drivers for the ports etc eventually it was decided could be a hardware problem and i have sent it in to tech support in toronto.

has anyone else had a similar problem. I don't think that any usb device should be capable of "blowing a port".

We have over 100 Motion tablets out there and I've never heard of that problem.

Did a quickie search for you. Here's what I got from the MS Knowledge Base" (link: http://tinyurl.com/4esqp )

When you plug a USB device into a powered USB hub or into the USB port on your computer, the device may not be available for use or may not receive power. You may not receive a "USB Hub Power Exceeded" error message.

    SYMPTOMS
USB device does not function after connecting device to a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer or to a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005-based computer

    CAUSE
This problem may occur if you plug in a high-power USB device such as a USB hard disk, and the USB device consumes more than 500 milli-amps (mA) power in a computer that supports either Intel ICH5 or ICH6 (I/O Controller Hub) system. Some ICH5 or ICH6 systems do not verify over-current situations and do not generate any "USB Hub Power Exceeded" error messages.

    WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, you must power the USB device by an external power source if one is available for the device. For example, you may be able to use an AC adapter to power the USB device.
    STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.[/i]

Apparently this can happen using a Tablet PC because SP2 treats the Tablet as a hub and gets confused if its powered or not. One trick is to make sure when you switch from battery to AC power, you plug in the AC adaptor to your Tablet FIRST, then plug the cord into the wall. Otherwise a power surge can cause problems.

I *think* this may be useful, but I may be waaaaaay off base.

When I dock I sometimes get a power surge, but I have been unable to figure out what the cause is.My flexdock is plugged into a good surge protector so I don't think that is a problem. I have not had problems using my usb devices after a surge though.

    Hi,

Yea it could be a hardware issue. Or you could try going into the Device Mgr and disabling the USB controllers then have the system scan for new hardware...
It may be worth a shot...
