Default OK, I finally went ahead and installed Service P

OK, I finally went ahead and installed Service Pack 2 on my Acer TravelMate C110. The installation seemed to go fine. However, when I rebooted afterward, the computer seemed to freeze partway through the startup cycle.

Previously, on startup, I would get a screen with (a) my wallpaper in the background, (b) a pictoral version of the keyboard, and (c) a log-in button with my administrator name next to it, which when clicked would finish launching Windows.

Now I get (a) and (b) but no (c). There's no log-in button, nor a Start button at the bottom of the screen. The computer won't go into hibernate or sleep mode, I can't shut it down or reboot it. I can move the cursor around, but clicking on the image of the keyboard does nothing.

    Help? Any ideas?

I'm definitely no expert when it comes to this, and would appreciate some backup or correction if I'm wrong, but it would seem to me that you would need to get into Safe Mode (keep pressing F8 when you see the Acer splash screen), and either go into Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and uninstall SP2, or use System Restore to get back to the point before you installed SP2. Good luck.

Thanks, Gypsy! I did finally manage to get the thing to shut down (by dint of holding the start button for a full ten seconds), and I'll try starting up again in safe mode. If all else fails, I guess I can reinstall XP (oh rapture, oh joy). Thanks again!

In the future if you have trouble shutting down windows, simply unplug the power supply and eject the battery. One added benifit is that the registry will not backup.
