Default Ok, here's the problem and the solution for all

Ok, here's the problem and the solution for all your Bluetooth issues with Motion's tablet. It took me a long time to solve these issues, including back-and-forth emails and phone calls between Motion Computing's tech support and Widcomm (which is now Broadcom) tech team.

If you install the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software on Windows XP SP2, you will get the following error as soon as you double click on the blue-red system tray icon: "Your Bluetooth Software license does not include use with this Bluetooth Device [6] After that you will be asked to point to a valid license.dat file. However if you select the license.dat that came with your manufacturer's driver (be it on CD-ROM or downloaded from the manufacturer's website) it still won't work. In other cases, it won't even let you choose a location for the license.dat file...

In Service Pack 2, Microsoft included a generic Bluetooth driver, naturally being WHQL-certified. The WIDCOMM Bluetooth driver however is not WHQL-certified, so Windows XP continues using the generic driver. This interferes with the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software resulting in the above error.

To force Windows XP to use the WIDCOMM driver, perform the following steps. If you are trying to create a network between your tablet and your Desktop PC, or to surf the internet on your tablet using your PC's internet connection through Bluetooth, you may need to follow some of these steps on your Desktop PC as well. Next to each step, I added TB or DSK (or both) depending on where these steps should be applied to.

    1. (TB/DSK) First thing first - disable any firewall you may have running (including Windows XP own firewall). That will rule out any firewall issue that may accrue along the way. Later on, when everything is working well, you may want to set up your firewall to work with the Bluetooth network. For now, if there's an option, check so that your firewall won't start itself again on reboot.

    2. (TB/DSK) Un-install any Bluetooth drivers previously installed on your tablet (or desktop). You should un-install both the drivers through the Device Manager (Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager) and the Widcomm software through the Add/Remove Program on the Control Panel. (NOTE: on your tablet, you might not see the Bluetooth drivers in the Device Manager if the "Enable Internal Bluetooth" is not checked on the Dashboard software. Make sure it IS checked, and then un-install drivers)

    3. (TB/DSK) After un-installing all Bluetooth drivers (Microsoft own drivers and Widcomm drivers if you had those installed) and the Widcomm software, UN-check the "Enable Internal Bluetooth" on the Dashboard software, and CHECK the "Boot with Internal Bluetooth Disabled. This is done so on your next reboot, windows won't automatically detect and install XP's own drivers. (DSK) on your Desktop, un-plug your USB Bluetooth, so on restart it won't be detected.

    4. (TB/DSK) Restart.

    5. (TB) Update your Motion tablet's BIOS and Dashboard software. READ THE RELEASE NOTES ON MOTION'S WEBSITE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU UPDATE YOUR BIOS AND DASHBOARD. This is very important. There are some limitations to these updates that you should be aware of before installing!

    http://www.motioncomputing.com/suppo...r_download.asp

In my case, when trying to flash the new BIOS, I got a message saying that I already have the newest BIOS.
I un-installed the old Dashboard software from the Add/Remove Program before installing the new version, and then installed the new version without rebooting in the middle (I was afraid that if I'll reboot without the Dashboard installed, my Bluetooth will be detected again by Win XP...). This worked for me.

    6. (TB/DSK) Rename the files BTH.INF (to BTH.INF.OLD for example) and BTH.PNF (to BTH.PNF.OLD for example). Both files are located in the C:\Windows\INF folder. These files contain information about the automatic installation of Windows' version of the Bluetooth drivers. If you don't rename or delete these files, XP keeps detecting its own drivers instead of the new Widcomm drivers.

    7. (TB/DSK) DO NOT plug in the Bluetooth device or enable Bluetooth on Dashboard just yet.

    8. (TB) Install the Widcomm BTW 1.4.2.10 Bluetooth software (Bluetooth Driver and Utilities). The latest version for Motion's tablets can be found at:

    http://www.motioncomputing.com/suppo...r_download.asp

(DSK) For your Desktop, look for Widcomm's drivers that came with the Bluetooth device installations CD or online.

IMPORTANT!!! During installation, when it asks you to plug in the Bluetooth device and click ok, DO NOT plug in the Bluetooth device or enable Bluetooth on Dashboard! Just click Cancel instead and let the installation finish.

ONLY when the Widcomm setup has finished, plug in your Bluetooth device (or check to enable Bluetooth on Dashboard) and let Windows start installing the driver. When asked, DO NOT let Windows XP connect to the Internet, and select "Choose software from a list or specified location". In the next window, select "DON'T search, but select the driver to install".

In the next window, activate "Show compatible hardware" (if it isn't activated already) and select Motion's Bluetooth driver instead of the generic drivers windows may detect. Click next until the new driver is installed.

Now the Widcomm system tray icon should be blue-white, activated and ready to use. If you now double click on "My Bluetooth Places" (e.g. on the desktop), the Widcomm software installation will be continued and finished.

If at some point you see two Bluetooth icons in the system tray; one blue-white and one blue-red, that means you've got both the XP and Widcomm's drivers installed. In that case, go to the Device Manager, right click on the "Generic Bluetooth Radio" and select "Update driver".

This should solve any compatibility issues with the Widcomm Bluetooth software and Microsoft Windows XP SP2.

NOW... Here's how to get your Bluetooth NETWORK running, i.e. to connect to the internet on your tablet using your Desktop's internet connection.
(DSK) On the Desktop PC, connected to the network do the following:

    1. Right-click on Bluetooth icon located in system tray and select "Advanced Configuration" menu option.
    2. When the Configuration Dialog appears, click on the "Local Services" tab.
    3. From the list of available services, highlight "Network Access" and click the "Properties" button.
    4. When the Network properties Dialog appears do the following:
    5. Make sure the "Startup Automatically" checkbox is checked.
    6. In the dropdown box, select option "Allow other devices to access the internet/LAN via this computer"
    7. Click the "Configure Connection Sharing" button, this will start "Network and Dialup Connections" window.
    8. Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon and select "Properties" menu option.
    9. Click on the "Sharing" tab and check "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection" checkbox. OR under Advanced, check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection".
    10. Click the "OK" button, and if more dialogs appear then just click OK to these also.
    11. Close the "Network and Dialup Connections" window.
    12. Click apply followed by OK, on Bluetooth Properties dialog.
    13. Click OK again to exit the Bluetooth Configuration Dialog.

(DSK) At this point the Desktop PC is configured to receive network connections from your Tablet using Bluetooth.

(TB) On your tablet, double click "My Bluetooth Places" (e.g. on the desktop). double-click Bluetooth Setup Wizard / "I know... (first option) / Network Access / and pick your desktop device found. Follow the next instructions and... everything should work now...

NOTE: Even after successfully connected, it might take a minute or two before packets starts send/receive and internet surfing is possible, but this should work nicely... :)

    Good luck!

Your identical post in this thread http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/to...TOPIC_ID=17834 does not allow the reader to respond so that all can easily follow the thread.

The rules asked that we not cross post.

    2. No cross-posting. This means that you may not post an identical post twice using two separate forums. The lowers the quality of the forum, and causes you to end up with multiple replies in different forums.

No worries. Now that you know the rules - How about you delete the two unecessary copies of the three posts avniassa? Then all will be forgiven ;) As Jim mentioned, most of it had been covered before anyway, but it may well be a useful reference for others who had problems like you.
