I have a fujitsu 2300 tablet pc. I want to use some DOS programs to reduce the size of hard drive space I need. Also I think most DOS programs would scream on a 233 mhz p1. Is this possible?
Thanks

More specifically, I want to be able to use the pen function of my mouse. I don't need anything else...although having a pop-up screen keyboard would be helpful.
I do not completely understand how the pen works in the tablet. Is it completely software driven? Or is there hardware also involved in the process? Is a driver that will make a mouse work in my tablet in DOS also make the pen work?

Haopengyou,
With the TIP docked, you can enter characters in a DOS Window [DOS, not full screen]. The TIP is software driven. If your DOS application accepts mouse input, you can use your mouse. Try what you want to do, and see what happens.
Thanks...but what do you mean by "tip docked"? I have worked with pc's for 20 years now but this is my first tablet.
To the right of your start button is an icon representing the Tablet PC Input Panel. Clicking on it opens the TIP, either docked at the top or bottom of the screen (versus an undocked TIP). You cannot enter text in a DOS Window with an undocked (floating) TIP because the DOS Window will not cause the floating TIP to show. You have to manually select it [by clicking on the TIP icon to the right of your Start Button]. Take a look at your tools and options dialog [selected by left clicking on the gear icon on the right-side of your TIP].
Let me know what happens.
First of, the 2300 is not a true Tablet PC (its actually a pen tablet). The "TIP" is an input structure contained in WinXP Tablet Edition. My guess is that you are not running that OS...most likely Win98 or NT.quote:Originally posted by haopengyou

Since the digitizer drivers you have do not work in DOS, you will not be able to use the pen in a DOS program. You will be able to use an on-screen keyboard (using the pen to type the keys) as long as you don't run the DOS program in full screen. (You can, for example, click on Start|Run and run command.com. This will give you DOS in a window and you'll be able to use the on-screen keyboard).
If you don't have an on-screen keyboard (you should have one with either the pen services or PenX if you have that), then a good alternative can be found here: http://www.lakefolks.org/cnt/.
If you attach a keyboard and mouse to your system, then, of course, you can run any DOS program (that supports a mouse) normally.
Hope that helps.
Thanks! Those pieces of info are helpful. Yes, I am running 98 on my fuji. I have heard people say that they can run XP but I think they are misleading themselves. I think it is possible to "walk" XP on a 233 Mhz P1 but not run :)
So what you are saying is if, while I am in the 98 mode, go to start, programs, MS DOS prompt I will have the keyboard but if I boot up directly to DOS I will not? I am sorry for asking such dumb questions but I rely on the computer for a lot of daily tasks - maybe 8-10 hours per day of almost constant use - and I am hesitant to "play" with that one. I have a computer that I can afford to "play" with but it is 80% Linux and will be another couple of weeks before it has a triple OS - also is not a tablet PC.
Hello again Haopengyou,
The information I gave you is for a Tablet PC [which you said you have] and the operation system [Windows XP Tablet PC Edition] for the TPC.
For Windows 98, you have a physical keyboard. It connects to your PC by wire [serial, ps/2, or USB] or wirelessly. You can type in at the DOS Prompt, either full screen or in a DOS Window, with your keyboard.
Again, just do it, and you will see what you can and cannot do.
Go for it… [helmet]
That's about right...I've installed XP TE on the 2300...everything works but too slow to be useful. I'm currently running Windows 2000 and it's great.quote:I have heard people say that they can run XP but I think they are misleading themselves. Correct. Not only are the on-screen keyboard programs Windows based (you may actually be able to find DOS on-screen keyboard programs), but the real problem is that the drivers used to recognize the pen are Windows based as well...no Windows, no pen.quote:So what you are saying is if, while I am in the 98 mode, go to start, programs, MS DOS prompt I will have the keyboard but if I boot up directly to DOS I will not?
