We went back to the drawing board several times trying to decide how to implement hidden and visible categories. The problem we were facing was visual information overload. (too many categories full of ink panels visible on the screen at one time)
Hence the concept of allowing users to turn OFF and ON categories. Turning OFF a category hides all panels in that category so that just the category name remains. Categories were to be toggled OFF and ON by double-clicking them.
This example shows a couple of categories that are ON, meaning the panel objects representing pages of ink in each category are visible. (categories are Customers & Bank Statements displayed as hatched style squares).
The color of each category and its attached panels can be customized for easier visual identification.
In this example we have allowed panel links (green & yellow lines) to remain visible while the category is hidden. This allows the user to gauge the relative importance of panels as indicated by how many links extend in/out to other panels and categories.
There is an option as well to have the green and yellow links NOT display when a category is hidden.
