1. Nope. The dock is designed to be grab and grow.
2. Not certain. I only use wireless.
I have just got my "as new" flexdock from Ebay. Whilst it is a beauty and works fine, there were no instructions in the box. So I have a couple of questions:
1) Is there any special care, recommendations, traps or things to look out for when inserting or removing my M1400VA?
I have a Netgear 802.1G Access point/router and up until now have been connecting the M1400 by WiFi. I have now connected the Flexdock to the accesspoint by Cat5 and have a WIRED connection as well. My thinking is that I would use WiFi to LAN when undocked and have it automatically switch to Cable to LAN when in the Flexdock. I thought this might provide a slightly more robust solution for doing large file operations like creating virual drives.
Anyway the issue is this: - When in the Flexdock, Network Connections indicate both connections are active and accordingly have seperate IPs.
2) Is this a problem having the two connections active simulataneously. (From the route logs it appears to be switching to the Cable to LAN router when docked.)
1. Nope. The dock is designed to be grab and grow.
2. Not certain. I only use wireless.
OK thanks Trevor. I think I'll just put up with the simultaneous connections as is seems to be operating just fine. I love the flexdock BTW. A real improvement. The Desktop Stand was just not cutting the mustard for me.
Having multiple LAN connections active at one time is no problem as long as you realize one thing. Without Route statements to direct traffic to a specific connection the LAST connection to become active is the one that TCP/IP traffic will use. The reason behind this is that the TCP/IP stack only supports one DEFAULT GATEWAY. The DG is the IP address that all requests are routed to first. When the first connection is active it is established as the default gateway. When the second becomes active it pushes the first down to be number 2 and it becomes number 1. In effect the first connection (which is now metric 2) is ignored unless you add route statements to direct some or all of your requests to it. Almost always, except in very technical, server type setups, there is no need to do this or even be concerned with it.
The order of activation could be important as the wired connection is much faster than the wireless. If this is important to you then you may want to disable the wireless. When you dock it it should be activating the wired connection last and therefore using it.
Hi,
You can also access the Network Connections Preferences
Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Advanced -> Advanced Settings ->
Adapters and Bindings to set your network connections preferences....
Since I have wired and unwired enabled I have my wired LAN connection listed 1st..
Paul
The configuration is fine. Do a web search on multihoming computers to learn more about it.
OK thanks Guys. Will leave it as is. Just made the modifications that you suggested Paulrr as that is the priority I would like as well.
