Ok i've had this tablet for about 2 weeks now. It definitely is slow. It seems to run slower than my old pentium 600 laptop. The main issue that i have is does anyone have problems with theirs getting exceedingly hot (almost painful) when it does this the task manager says that the cpu is at 100% and using 480 mb of memory. This mainly seems to happen in tablet mode (screen swiveled, i don't konw why that would make a difference). The computer runs really slow after this has happened and if i reset it gets a little better, not much, best fix is to turn it off for awhile. I don't know if it is SP2 (i upgraded upon receipt and have since uninstalled and reinstalled, will go back to sp1 by way of restore this weekend). Tech says that they don't know. Overall tech support has been helpful though.

I like it overall. I'm a law student and it is exactly what i need to write, take notes and print to journal and read everything in digits. Just trying to figure out if i should stay with it or take it back and suck up the $1000 extra for the m205.

    Thoughts???

Has it always been slow? Check for spyware and viruses first. Open MSconfig and uncheck everything you don't need. I spent a couple of hours with Averatec and it is not slow.

How do you operationally define slow?

i define slow as a comparision to the same amount of programs running at one time on this computer with the same programs, minus taplet xp vs. win 2k on old box. It has always been slow but stable. i'm conducting a restore tonight to see if it gets any better without sp2 on it.

one quick question before I launch into my input - is there any particular program or group of programs that this evidences itself the most in?

Several others have complained about the machines slowing down over time (including before SP2 was out). I haven't experienced that at all, and I do some heavy duty stuff with the machine, more than I expected to ask of it based on the specs. I ripped/stripped my OS and killed 80% of the software loaded on the machine as soon as I got it, and I suspect that helped some. I also run plugged in as much as possible to keep the processor throttled up when working on anything that requires any significant processing power. The spy/mal-ware comment is also very valid if you hadn't taken that into consideration.

And there is always the possibility that something is wrong with your machine, but as you said "slow but stable" doesn't sound like a broken machine. Instead it sounds like:

    1. overheated - throttled down to protect itself
    and/or
    2. under powered - throttled back based on battery saving measures
    and/or
    3. overencumbered - too much stuff running in the background

regarding getting hotter in "tablet" mode:

There is a major reason why convertibles can get much hotter while in "tablet" configuration. They produce a lot of heat, and the passive ways they give off their heat (conduction, convection and radiation) are driven by surface area. And when the screen is flipped over and sandwiched down over the keyboard, you effectively cut in half the surface area of the machine that can give up the heat. This effects all convertibles, not sure if the Averatec is better/worse than the others - I've heard complaints from most of the groups in the forums but not direct comparison data or reviews with respect to this issue.

Good luck sorting out your concerns. www.blackviper.com has some excellent advice for trimming the fat of WindowsXP, and I haven't found any of it that conflicts with the Tablet version.

Mine seems to be running OK. Since winXP came out, the first thing I do is max out the ram.

I had this system and had the manager promise I could return it with no restocking fee based on user complaints i had read online. Tried it for a week and returned it. My battery lasted all of an hour maybe hour and a half. It got extremely hot and screen seemed slow to respond at times. Don't get me wrong good little machine if your plugged in all the time and i mean for the money its ok. I just couldn't deal with it anymore.
