I have a 2.0ghz dothan w/ 1gb memory, and my fan never runs when i'm simply taking notes. It's quiet as a whistle. Now, if I start playing WoW or something... then the fan kicks in. It's slightly loud, but I'd say about what you'd expect from a normal laptop.
I should note that I use the "Normal" setting when running on batteries. The only change I made was a to turn up the screen brightness to max and never have it scale down.
