Default I bought a new NEC Tablet recently (6 months ago

I bought a new NEC Tablet recently (6 months ago), and unfortunately, it turned out to be a lemon. The digitizer is very tempermental and in the last few weeks the fan has become so noisy that I can no longer rely on being able to use it in class without disturbing lectures.

I'm looking to replace it ASAP (as soon as I can scrape the money together), and I'm trying to determine which tablet would be the most reliable. I'd prefer a slate-style machine with a better viewing angle and a brighter screen than the M200, but at this point, I'm willing to trade most anything for reliability. I know Toshibas have a good rep, and I have an 8 year old Toshiba laptop that's still chugging away without any problems... So I'm wondering what other peoples' experiences are with the reliability of the M200. Specifically, I'm wondering about:

    1) Fan noise: is the fan quiet? Has anyone experienced the fan suddenly becoming very noisy (rattling, humming, buzzing, etc.) after a few months of use?

    2) Digitizer: any problems here? Is the screen uniformly sensitive? Does it register "invisible" pen clicks/movements, etc.? My NEC registers invisible pen clicks at the top right-hand corner of the screen regularly - exactly where the "close" button is for OneNote. It's really fun when I'm in the middle of recording lecures/taking notes and the app suddenly quits out from under me.

    3) Screen: Is the viewing angle reasonable? I've read a lot of complaints about it. I can't get a sense from the forum whether the screen is awful, or if people just have higher expectations than I do. Can anyone compare it to the NEC screen?

    4) ruggedness: I carry my tablet around with me in a wheeled case with about 15 lbs. of books. It gets bumped and jostled a fair amount. Does anyone have any experience with toting their M200 around regularly? How well does it take the handling?

Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions!

    1) Fan noise: I've been running my m200 for 10 hrs a day since April with no issues.

    2) No problems with the digitizer.

    3) Screen: good. not great. I've heard the new motion has an awesome screen.

    4) Ruggedness: I keep my m200 in a backpack. I have not been too rough with it but have had no issues with it.

    Good luck on your decision.

Wow, have you been reading these forums since April? I ask because you have two posts...LOL, nothing bad. Just curious I guess. Not really important, just was slightly humored. Alright, I have to stop wasting (I mean spending my time gloriously) at these forums and do some homework. Hah, most of you probably haven't had homework for years, or maybe even decades... Don't you feel so old! Sorry for the off-topic post...

At my age, it's not called 'homework', it's called 'taking work home'...

I now wish I had been reading this forum since April! I got the tablet in April and only now find out that www.tabletpcbuzz.com exists. I am holding each of you personally responsible for not informing me

I know this was naive but I felt that I was the only one experiencing odd issues with my tablet. The other folks who have tablets around here were looking for me for insight *gasp*

*looks around* I think I like this place. And to think that forums were for wasting time at work. Now if I could only figure out which client to bill while I'm trolling this forum...

This place is nicer than it looks. :)

I would suggest to be fair, you should bill the client that has been billed the least recently. that way everyone pays the same. Or you could just bill the biggest ID10T that you deal with. :)

Cool - thanks for letting me know. I was originally planning on getting a Motion, but after reading through the Motion forum, I started to get the feeling they were having about as many problems as the NEC. Plus it seems their service is atrocious. I'm not willing to risk having my tablet flake out on me again after 6 months. I need it every day & can't spare 2/3 weeks without it while it's in for servicing.

I'm getting the feeling that there aren't any known structural/hardware problems with the Toshiba - and it seems to be the only tablet for which that is true. All the complaints I've read about it on this forum are about the viewing angle of the screen or people not liking the composite design. Are there any M200 horror stories out there? :-)

I haven't experienced it firsthand, but I believe that owners have done some serious complaining about the Toshiba support. But I really like my M200 and it's been fine so far, less one small problem that no one else has encountered.

Every tablet has it's quirks and what each user brings to it also adds a few. That said, the M200 is a great tablet. I've been using it since December 2003 with no real issues. Toshiba support (like most I'm guessing) is hit and miss. So much depends on who you get on the phone and how insistent you are about stepping up the support ladder. They have been responsive to some and not to others based on what has been reported here.

    That's my .02.
