    Hi all,

    Just a simple question...
Due to the fact that my ears are very sensitive I like a quiet tabletpc. My main "concern" is the harddisk. Does it make a whirring sound? Are there other sound making ventilations hearable?

    Thanks in advance.

In normal operation, I don't hear the HD spinning. When reading or writing to the HD, there is definately noise but not too loud.

That said, I must say that the M200 is the quietest laptop I've ever used. The fan noise isn't very loud at all. I can hear it when it comes on but it's very subtle.

Noise was a concern when I was looking to buy. I got an Averatec 3500 from Costco and returned it the same day because of the noise from it's fan. Sounded like the batmobile starting up whenever the fan came on.

Stores are horrible places to try and get a sense of the noise level of a computer. Too much ambient noise.

Try to check out any user groups in your area. That may be the perfect place to see different hardware and guage the noise from each.

Thank's mikie, I appreciate your reply. It's exactly wat I was hoping to hear. (I now have a sony laptop that had a toshiba HD in it. It had a very annoying whirring so I had it replaced with an IBM HD which is dead-silent :-)

    ivanilia,
Nearly 6 months of use, and I still find the M200 to be relatively quiet. Not silent (I do hear the fan when it kicks in, and I can hear the hard drive but it is not objectionable).

I think this will depend somewhat, on which hard drive you get, and how you use your machine. I happen to have the 60 gig 7200 rpm drive (Hitachi) and it is fine.

If whatever you are doing with your machine requires a lot of disk access, or if you are memory constrained (which will increase disk access) then you will be more aware of the noise.

Overall it has been a pleasant and quiet machine to use.

    Hi,
Probably I am also very sensitive to HD-noice. Regarding the M200 with 60GB 7200 - it is at the edge... But it is not too bad. Better HDs (but smaller in size and slower) are included in the HP TC1100 and NEC T400. The T400 is especially quiet but has a couple of real hardware problems.
I would suggest - if the M200 is the notebook/tablet of choice and only the HD-noice is the limiting factor - get the M200 and buy a hd which is more quiet.... Fan etc. is okay.
These are all just personal opinions...

Thanks for your reply, both of you. I start to doubt when I hear you say; It's on the edge, because i am very picky (i'm not sure this is the right word) when it comes down to computernoise. But i am satisfied that the ventilatornoise is acceptable. I could always trade HD's with my sony laptop which i have now. It has an ibm hd which is almost deadsilent but fast enough.

    thanx again, ivan
