Sometimes when I try to shutdown, it hangs and makes me close explorer.exe manually from an error screen eventhough no programs appear to be running. Any ideas?

Have you done a scandisk on your harddrive? It might be a corrupted file or something. Also try starting up in safemode and then shutting down. If there's no error, one of the programs that you run maybe causing the hangup (ie firewall, antivirus, etc)
