Default Pointing Stick does nothing... please help :)

Just received Tc1100 at work yesterday, everything is working perfectly except the 'pointing stick'!!! and it is driving me crazy. If anyone can help it would be soooooooooo greatly appreciated...

USB mouse work fine, but the pointing stick does absolutely nothing...

    I must have tried everything under the sun (after reading so many web sites);

    1. Clean XP installment, including driver recovery disk [didn't help]

    2. Went into BIOS page, there was no option of 'pointing stick' [didn't help]

    3. Downloaded and installed every updates from HP web site, [din't help]

Totally running out of things to do... any suggestions would be great.

    Many, many thanks.

    Hello ptatirat,

Go to Device Manager and see if there are any disabled devices in the HID area.

If so, see if you can enable them.

If not, you should be able to remove all HID devices and reboot. Windows should rediscover them.

If that doesn't help, I would suspect a broken keyboard.

    Hi WNewquay,

Many thanks for your kind guidance.

In the Device Manager, there were some HID devices where the option to 'enable' is blank, basically I could not enable nor disable the option.

I have deleted it and reboot the Tc1100...

However, after returning to the Device Manager, those devises with blank 'enable/disable' option came back, especially the HID Keyboard Device... somehow I think this is the problem.

Thank you very much for your kind suggestion...

    Hi PT

On occasion and it's rare for me, the pointing stick will not be recognized and I have to disconnect and then reconnect the keyboard while the machine is running. Maybe you have some dust in the connections. Before buying a new keyboard (they come up on eBay from time to time), you should try some compressed air in the keyboard side of the connection.

    Hi WNewquay :)

Thank you very much once again, like I said I was willing to try anything. so I was blowing like mad into the connectors this morning (by the way I am in Bangkok, Thailand) knowing that what it really needs is high pressure compressed air (as per your suggestion), somehow all my collegues think I am loosing my mind.

I am close to giving up this little quest of mine (to get the damn pointing stick to move), many sincere thanks for your time and guidance.

    Hi WNewquay,

Just in case you wanted to know, the pointing stick is now working perfectly, I had decided to take it apart and found out the pointing stick was simply a flat piece of metal, guessing that it worked on the 'stress' pending on where the finger pushes it.

Then I had discovered the keyboard was slightly warped (basically it didn't lay flat on a flat surface), all I did was to put some pressure on the keyboard to make it flat again (bending the hell out of it), since then it had been working perfectly (knock on wood).

    Many thanks.

    Hi PT

Thank you for letting us know how things worked out, or rather, what you did to get things working. I'm sure somebody else will benefit from your experience.

    Thanks!
