Do you have a recommendation for a bootable DVD/CD-RW device for the M200? This question was asked a couple months ago, but before I purchase a drive, I wanted to see if anyone had different ideas. The drives that made the list last time included:

    - Sony DRX-510UL
    - Sony MPD-AP20U
    - SonyDRX-530UL
    - Storix – no longer available

    Thanks,
    -Chad

Here are some extra drives to take a look at. Both of them support bootable CDs but the problem is that they are not USB 2.0 bus powered, which means you need to bring the AC power supply.

    ASUS SCB-2408-D 24/12/24/16 USB 2.0 CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Several folks (including me) recently purchased the Panasonic LF-P567C at a great price of $99. It is DVD -Ram writer and is bootable. Here is a thread regarding that drive.

It is not completely portable as it needs the AC adaptor.

    Hi Chad,

I'm glad you asked this question because I was going to post the same question. I spent nearly 3 hours last night trying to determine the best drive for me and much to my surprize, I just couldn't find a drive that fit the bill and is available for purchase.

I bet a lot of us have these same requirements. What is the best definite portable drive that fits the following requirements?

+ Portable and slim (well, as slim as possible)
    + Powered by USB (preferbly)
    + Bootable
    + DVD+/- RW

There's got to be a drive that meets these requirements. Please let us know If you know of any.

    Thanks so much!

    Chad,

In my experience the Sony MPD-AP20U comes closest to filling the bill. I own that one as well. It's portability is limited by battery life.

You can also check this out.
This seems to support everything you want, but im not too sure about it being bootable. For $150 you get 2X DVD recording and for $250 you can get 4X.

Is that Lite-On drive bootable? Has anyone here tried it? I would like a cheap drive that is bootable. That's all I need. Optimally, it would be in the $50 range, but technology is expensive. I dont need an everyday drive, just something maybe portable that I can boot off of and is CHEAP. :) I use alcohol 120% anyway for all my CD needs.

    Regarding the Panasonic LF-P567C:

The price of $99 was absolutely phenomenal and consequently I snatched one up ASAP. It has worked OK for me, but I don't yet have an m200 so I can't give you any info on that. However, buy.com was blowing them out and I believe they are now out of stock. It seems to me that it may have been an old model or something because mine was produced in September 2003 per the label on the underside of the device. If buy.com has more now, I would suggest buying one. It is a DVD-R/RW/RAM burner as well as a CD burner....very useful.

    Just a word of caution...

I bought the Sony DRX530 UL following the discussion the in previously mentioned thread... I did NOT find that it was bootable. It would start to boot and then it would just get stuck for hours. It didn't seem to be completely recognized. Eventually, I had to buy the Toshiba Slimline PA3246U-1DVD which works like a charm.

In my experience, the Sony 530 is NOT bootable.

Buy.com is out of stock on the Panasonic LF-P567C but they are selling a simliar model for about $100 http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...6&loc=101&sp=1. According to the site its new. I'm not sure it its bootable or not but it does require AC power.
