    Hi all

I'm running RC1 of SP2 and just this morning, I lost all of my buttons for my running programs on the Task Bar. Everythings still runnings, I just can't see it.

The only way to actually get to other apps now is to Alt-Tab as I can't actually see anything running. It seems that the Task bar tools bars are somehow appearing 'over' everything so I can't see my tasks that are running.

Even turning off all the toolbars doesn't work as the Tablet PC Input Panel 'Toolbar' on the task bar can't be removed. This is the culprit I think that is hiding all of my tasks (as if you close all other task bars the PC Input Panel one 'expands' to cover the entire task bar...and it's somehow lost the size bar on the right hand side...so I can't resize it :-/

Any way to reset any of this??? I've tried TweakUI but to no avail. I just can't seem to reset the size of the Tablet PC Input Panel button (or at least be able to resize it) which I obviously need to do

    Thanks in advance

If its a one off I would just suggest closing everything down and rebooting.

If you really need to see whats running the only thing i can think of doing here (other than rebooting) is to load task manager (right click on the empty task bar and select "task manager") and end the explorer.exe process. Then if nothing re-appears select "file>new task" from the task manager menu and type "explorer.exe". This should let you see everything that is running.

    Is this happening often?

    Afraid I've done all that...

rebooting, closing Explorer task explicitely. Nothing has worked. The task bar always comes back in this state. Explorer's obviously saved this corrupt state of the taskbar somewhere in the registry.

My next plan is to create a new user profile and see if it's occurring on a new user as well. I'm assuming (and hoping!) it doesn't!

This is the first time it's happened so haven't got repro steps and as yet any way to recover either...arghhhh

As suspected the Tablet PC Input Panel button (the 'TipBand') was definitely the culprit. Unregistering the COM DLL for this resolved the issue (never used it anyways now that SP2 is here).

    So now we know!

Check out this thread for a post by bpjen that seems like it found a fix for this type of problem.

Thanks for the link...that is EXACTLY what happened. However unregistering the TipBand also resolved the issue so I'm sure it's related somehow.

Im curious - are we now allowed to talk about Lonestar in public because the ms Beta site still indicates that a full NDA is in force right now? Sorry to post in this topic but since you guys are all talking about it, it seemed a good place to ask.

I am guessing the NDA is for the lucky private beta testers who have the versions of lonestar released only through the msbeta site.

As far as i know, I did not agree to any NDA when I downloaded the publicly available Windows XP Service Pack 2 RC1, hence we can freely talk about this version.

What's more, they actually promote its discussion since they have setup forums for the users to discuss issues experienced.

Thanks guys. I'll keep hushed then until I know what the differences are between the one you have and the one I have.
